The oldest of three children, Dave Barnes was born in South Carolina in 1978. He is the son of a Presbyterian (PCA) pastor who relocated his family to Kosciusko, Mississippi, just as Dave turned six years old. After ten years in Mississippi, the Barnes family moved to Knoxville, Tennessee the summer before Dave's junior year in high school. Though Dave was a percussionist in his high school bands, he eventually began writing songs in addition to playing drums. Initially, Barnes was reluctant to sing his songs himself, but his college roommate convinced him to give it a try. Before long, Barnes was gaining attention beyond the campus at Middle Tennessee State University.
After graduating from University, Barnes began touring and in 2002 released his acclaimed 5 song EP Three, Then Four, as purely a guitar and vocals release.
Barnes began to develop a following of fans keen to hear more from the both humorous and insightful songwriter. Barnes toured heavily with the likes of Marc Broussard and Bebo Norman for over a year after that. Through this period, Barnes met Ed Cash, with whom Barnes has co-produced both of his studio releases.
At the suggestion of Cash, it was then time for Barnes to record a full band Studio LP. Barnes released Brother, Bring The Sun in September 2004. This album was critically acclaimed for Barnes' songwriting and overall high quality presentation for an independent release. Also through its release, Barnes gained notability amongst famous singers Amy Grant (who later performed on Barnes' Wedding song "I Have And I Always Will"),[1] Vince Gill and John Mayer.[2]
In 2005, Barnes co-produced the 5 song EP Today & Tomorrow for best friend Matt Wertz. Barnes also contributed his songwriting to one of its songs.
In 2006 Barnes released his second full band studio album Chasing Mississippi to a welcome response. The critical response was good, though some critics seemed a little disappointed, if only by the high standard set on the first album.
In mid to late 2006, Barnes toured with Matt Wertz with songs from both albums and some newly written material also.
