The Datoga are an ethnic and linguistic group based in north-central Tanzania. In 2000 the Datoga population was estimated to number 87,978, including an unspecified number of members of the Barabaig and other subgroups [1].

Genetic research made by Knight et al. (2003)[citation needed] showed that Y-chromosome lineages of 8 Datoga men consisted of 1 man belonging to Y-haplogroup E3a, 5 men belonging to other subclades of DE (i.e. E1, E2, E3b, D), and 2 men belonging to other Y-haplogroups (C, F). The female lineages of 18 Datoga women consisted primarily of mtDNA haplogroup L0a that is very common in South-East Africa and is distantly related to mtDNA haplogroups L0d and LOk present in Khoisan, as well as to L0f detected in some populations of East Africa, e.g. the Iraqw.
