DAT politics

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

DAT politics is a French electronic music group. Its music is sometimes classified as musique concrète. They began in 1999 in Lille, France, as a quartet featuring Claude Pailliot, Gaëtan Collet, Vincent Thierion and Emeric Aelters. Previously, three members had played together in the band Tone Rec, which released several albums of abstract electronic music on the Belgian label Sub Rosa. DAT politics quickly found its own musical identity and released four albums on such prestigious labels as Tigerbeat6, Chicks on Speed, A-musik, and SKI-PP, which they founded themselves. They have also collaborated with musicians including Matmos, Lesser, Felix Kubin, Kid 606, Blevin Blectum, and Nathan Michel.

The band is renowned for live shows and has toured extensively worldwide. DAT Politics has released albums by artists such as Felix Kubin, Goodiepal, Nathan Michel, and Aelters under SKI-PP.

The band creates their own art, as seen on their album covers, website, and music videos.

Though somewhat genre-bending, their style can be described as a mixture between minimalism and deconstructed techno, with much more of a light-hearted tone than that of similar glitch artists such as Matmos. Many songs include obscure sped-up or slowed down vocal samples (often to the point of chipmunk-sounding absurdity) and juxtaposed orchestra hits and synthesizers amidst pop undertones.
