[edit] Production
The opening scene was added late in production, was shot for real, and was made by literally running the film backwards through the camera magazine. The sound was kept playing forwards. The scene where Leonard kills Teddy was shot in Long Beach. The black and white scenes were shot to add a "documentary" feel to the film. Pearce's narration was mostly improvised. They were also shot handheld and high-angle, but this technique slowly wore down, the idea being that as the film progressed they would get closer and closer to the color scenes. Many scenes were shot with a handheld camera, often following Leonard into a new location or when he is gazing at objects, to enhance the viewer's connection with Leonard. The flashbacks involving Sammy Jenkis were shot in one day.
