Darren arrived in Albert Square to join his brother Mickey, along with mum Rosie, dad Keith, twin sister Demi and Genghis, the family dog. He was later joined by Demi's baby Aleesha and his elder sister Dawn.

He revealed that he was having problems reading and writing, and is now learning, along with his dad.

In November 2005, Darren found thousands of pounds thrown out in the rubbish (the money was meant for Chrissie Watts' bail but was accidentally thrown out by Nana Moon). Darren used the money to buy a mobile phone, and spent lots of it on his new girlfriend, Kylie. Kylie broke up with Darren when Stacey Slater refused to sell him alcohol. Darren then shared some of the money with Demi so she could buy a headstone for her boyfriend, Leo's grave. A few weeks later, Darren and Demi overheard Jake Moon saying he had lost a lot of money, so they realised it was his money they had found. Darren and Demi used the money to buy expensive Christmas decorations for their home. Alfie Moon realised they must have found the money and confronted Darren, who denied it. Alfie later decided not to tell Jake he knew what happened to the money, before leaving Walford for America. On 27 December 2005, Darren and Demi's half sister Dawn found the money when looking for some perfume that Darren had taken. Darren and Demi confronted Dawn and she said they had to split the money three ways. They did so for a while, hiding the money in the sofa. When Keith found Darren with some of the money, he took it and said he'd use some of it to buy Rosie a present. Darren had told him that he found the money on the street. Keith did not know there was more money hidden away.

Dawn's dad, Mike stayed with the family for a while and slept on the sofa. He discovered the money hidden in the sofa and stole it from them, suggesting to Keith that he get a new sofa, so they put the old one on the bonfire. He did so and Dawn, Darren and Demi, thinking the money was still inside, were horrified to discover the sofa on the bonfire.

Darren got a job at the car lot and tried to beat Deano to find a name for the business in order to win a car. In late May 2006, Darren found himself a new friend and fancier, Squiggle Fox. When Darren played truant and missed the school photograph, Squiggle photoshopped his face onto the photo so he could trick his parents into believing he was at school. The pair then played a prank on Squiggle's sister, Chelsea, by photoshopping images of her and advertising her as a call girl.

There was tension in Rosie and Keith's relationship when Rosie kissed Mike. Rosie planned to run off with him but stayed with Keith for Darren and Demi's sake. Keith forgave Rosie and Mike left the Square, however Keith and Rosie later split up for a brief period and Keith moved out and lived with Garry and Minty. Keith moved back in when he proposed to Rosie, but he didn't really want to get married. Keith kept putting off the wedding, but Rosie didn't want to wait, and the wedding ceremony took place on 4 July 2006 at Walford Register Office. However, Rosie couldn't go through with the wedding and jilted Keith halfway through the ceremony. The next day, Rosie told the family she planned to move away with Darren, Demi and Aleesha to take on a new job as housekeeper in the Cotswolds, and start a new life without Keith. Darren was less than happy with the news and didn't want to leave. Rosie didn't want Darren to grow up in London as he would just end up like Keith. Rosie convinced Keith to get Darren to leave, by saying he wasn't interested in bringing up his son. As Darren, Rosie, Demi and Aleesha made their exit in Clint's car, Rosie saw how upset Darren was and decided to tell him that Keith had made it all up, and she allowed him to stay in Walford with his dad. Rosie, Demi and Aleesha moved away on 7 July 2006.

On 27 December 2006, Darren attempted to seduce Li Chong, but was left stunned, when she tied him to the bed and left him to suffer the humiliation at the hands of Mickey and Keith.
