Dark psytrance (often called dark psy or simply dark) is a darker and more distorted form of psychedelic trance music. Originating in Russia and Germany, the syle has recently expanded to other countries worldwide.

Unlike more mainstream forms of trance, dark psytrance generally does not use vocals, though sampling is common, with samples usually being taken from horror movies. The atmosphere and theme of the tracks often resemble those from genres such as darkcore, cybergrind, and industrial music. Though inspired to some extent by heavy metal, guitars are rarely used. Glitch techniques can also often be found in dark psytrance.

The term "Dark psytrance" was first used by audiences to denominate more harder-sounding psychedelic trance.
