From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
These characters first appeared or only featured in the Dark Tournament Saga of YuYu Hakusho (episodes 26-66).
- Koto (小兎), Juri (樹里), and Luka (English manga) /Ruka (English anime) (瑠架 Ruka) the barrier creator (結界師) - Koto and Juri were the announcers for the Dark Tournament which Yusuke, Kurama, Hiei, and Kuwabara fought in. Koto originally served as the referee for the Tournament, but later in the semifinals Koto was replaced by Juri as referee and was transferred to the announcer's booth. Ruka was the barrier creator (initially dressed as a nurse) who was to keep Hiei and Genkai at bay during the Mashotsukai/Shadow Channelers match. After this, she can be seen near the end of the Dark Tournament saga nursing the injured fighters that lost the tournament. Koto also worked as the announcer in the Makai Tournament. Ultimately they become idols of the human (and youkai) worlds, appearing often on television and garnering many fans.

[edit] Teams
[edit] Rokuyukai Team / Jolly Devil Six
- Rinku (鈴駒) - Rinku is a child-demon who uses Yo-Yos which he controls with his demon energy, making them highly maneuverable. He defeats Kuwabara, because Kuwabara was ensnared by Rinku's yo-yo strings and couldn't get back in the ring in time. He later trains under Genkai and becomes an A-class demon and enters the Makai Tournament, but loses.
- Roto (呂屠) - Roto is a dishonorable fighter. He possess the ability to produce a large blade from the back of his hand. Roto faces Kurama in the Second round of the Dark Tournament. Kurama has the upper hand as Roto tries to punch him, but throughout the fight Roto calls Kurama by his human name "Shuuichi Minamino". Just as Kurama was about to finish him, Roto says he holds Kurama's mother's life in his hand. This brings out the evil in Kurama who kills Roto by a Death Seed.
- Zeru (是流) - The "Captain" Of Jolly Devil Six a.k.a. Team Rokuyukai. His power is based around fire (火炎術), his only attacks he uses are Fire Aurora, and a fire blast attack. He seemingly punches Hiei through the stomach, then shoots a fire blast at him, yet again seemingly killing him. Then Hiei appears behind Zeru, Zeru is stunned, not knowing that a fire-based attack won't work on other fire demons. Thus he is killed by the infamous Black Dragon Hell Fire (Jao Ensatsu Koku Ryu Ha) (it is also referred to as Dragon of the Darkness Flame in the English version).
- Chu (酎 Chū) - Chu is the true captain of the Jolly Devil Six a.k.a. Team Rokuyukai. One of his types of fighting styles is the Drunken Fist. When preforming Drunken Fist he moves with an erratic stumbling motion which, in addition to making him difficult to attack, allows him to move very quickly. He fuses his spirit energy with the alcohol to form his Sui Ken, which is a ball of energy he throws at his opponent. The other form of fighting he uses is favorite type- a Knife Edge Death Match, in which he put his knives into the floor of the arena, and he and his opponent put their feet to the knife. The first one to slip his foot off the knife loses, and the winner has the right to kill the loser. He later falls in love with a demon girl named Natsume, in the Makai Tournament and surrenders to her automatically when fighting in the preliminaries.
Two other teammates, Imajin and Gao, are killed by Chu for being cowards and trying to run away after seeing Zeru killed.
[edit] Team Ichigaki
A team consisting of a demon scientist and his experiments. They don't seem to be fighting for any specific goal in the Dark Tournament other than for the doctor to test out his experiments.
- Dr. Ichigaki (Dr. イチガキ) - He is a demon scientist who took advantage of three martial art students by poisoning their master. Dr. Ichigaki then appeared and offered to heal their master if they agreed to participate in an experiment of his. Dr. Ichigaki turned them into Makai minions (Usually called M1, M2, M3, or Dr. Ichigaki's minions). After his team's defeat in the tournament, he unveils a serum ("Instant Gene Therapy") which almost instantly enhances him into a monster form, but is creamed by Yusuke just as quickly. In the manga he is confirmed to be alive.
- M1, M2, M3 - En, Ryo, Kai - The three gave their freedom up to get Ichigaki to heal their master. M1(En) used "Angel Blades", circular, throwable blades of spirit energy. M2(Ryo) used his "Light Javelin", which is similar to Kuwabara's Rei Ken. M3(Kai), the strongest of the three, used various red spirit energy blasts, like the Grizzly Claw. Each of their attacks were considered 'highly advanced' by Genkai. M2 and M3's attacks are invisible to those without sufficient spirit training, in contrast M1 appears to throw six Angel Blades when he is actually throwing only two. They fight extremely efficiently as a team, using their attacks to cover each other and keep their opponents on the defensive. Yusuke and Kuwabara were initially unable to see though their attacks at all, although later an enraged Yusuke is able to see though their techniques and attack them successfully.
There are two other (probably demon) members in this team, M4 and M5, but both were killed after they tried to ambush Hiei and Kurama before the match started. It's not known if they underwent experimentation by Dr. Ichigaki also.
[edit] Team Mashotsukai (Japanese version) / Shadow Channelers (English manga) / Team Masho (English anime)
A team of demon ninjas, already famous throughout Demon World. Touya mentions they came to the tournament in the hope of requesting Hanging Neck Island itself. He also mentions they wanted to emerge from the dark world and into the light, but what exactly he meant by that isn't certain.
- Gama (画魔) - His speciality is the "secret art" of make-up, using paint made of blood to bring out spiritual abilities and increase strength. His two known attacks are the Make-up of Chains (Gokujono Sho) and the Make-up of the Seal (Nembaku Fuji no Sho). He fights Kurama in the opening team match, and uses his attacks to chain Kurama down and then seal his yōki (aura, or demon energy) within him. Kurama's only choice, because of the Gokujo no Sho, is to use his Rose Whip. He ends up killing Gama, and becomes unable to move off of the arena, and ends up fighting three consecutive matches.
- Touya (English anime) or Toya (凍矢 Tōya) (English manga) - Toya is a somewhat honorable fighter. He fights Kurama right after Gama is killed, seeing how the Gokujono no Sho is still in effect. Kurama was unable to leave the ring and was officially the next fighter. With the Nembaku Fuji No Sho on him Kurama is at a disadvantage. Toya uses his Ma Teki Sandansha to try to kill Kurama, but loses after trying his ice sword, the Sei no ken, on Kurama, who countered by placing a Death Seed in his own body in order to use his powers. He, along with Jin also train under Genkai to enter the Makai Tournament. His power is 'ice manipulation' which he uses to produce his ice sword, cover the ring in ice, and create potent ice darts.
- Bakken (English anime) or Bakuken (爆拳) - The third fighter on Team Mashotsukai, a hulking brute with little brains or honor. Thanks to the Team Mashotsukai's owner, Bakken was able to fight against Kurama, who was unconscious from the previous round. Yusuke was ready to break the rules to save Kurama, but luckily Risho ordered Bakken to stop. Bakken then faced Yusuke next but it didn't take long for Yusuke to defeat him. His power is 'water manipulation', which he uses to create a dense fog to conceal himself.
- Jin, The Master of Wind (陣) - A famous wind master and the most honorable player on Team Mashotsukai, he fights Yusuke after Yusuke beats Bakken. Jin has a cheerful, upbeat personality and feels fighters should enjoy themselves in the ring, especially if they are battling for their lives. Jin fights by dodging Yusuke's punches and flying out of his reach while attacking Yusuke form the air. He has powerful air manipulation techniques which he uses for both offense and defense. Both fighters are equally matched, and although Yusuke manages to eventually knock Jin out, the match officially called a draw on a technicality.
- Risho - He is the dishonorable leader of Team Mashotsukai, he cheats to advance his team in the tournament and isn't above attacking his own teammates if they disagree with him. His attacks are based around earth, Armor of Clay (a defense and offense raise), and Spiked Armor of Clay (another boost), as well as a general control of the earth around him. He loses to a badly injured Kuwabara when Yukina arrives, motivating Kuwabara to unleash his spirit energy.
[edit] Team Uraotogi / Fractured Fairy Tales (English manga only)
It is interesting to note that the members of this team were named for or inspired by famous Japanese legends. The team name can be translated as "reversed fairytale".
- Suzuki (スズキ) / Suzuka (English anime only) - The leader of the Uraotogi team, and the only member not based off Japanese folktales. He is the master of disguises and during the Dark Tournament, he used the form of an old man and named himself Onji, because he can't think of anything that disgusts him more then old people, because they are ugly. He also considers himself as a handsome person, which everyone disagrees. He can also project a giant bubble that captures and traps the opponent inside and let a portal suck it inside. The portal leads the person it engulfed towards a far place. When Kuwabara was sucked into the portal, it led him back to the old dome of the tournament which is only a few blocks away from the dome they currently use. This happened to him twice when he returned to the new dome where the tournament was being held and continued his match with Suzuki. When Genkai took Kuwabara's place after losing the match, she defeated him with a little bit of pleasure because of his annoying pride. Genkai remarks that although Suzuki has a lot of knowledge about many different kinds of techniques and magical artifacts, his body and spirit energy are poorly trained. After the match, he gave a sword handle to Kuwabara which absorbs its holder's power and emits a special sword. He also gave a liquid solution to Kurama that will transform him back to his Youko form. These two were essential tools to Kuwabara and Kurama's success to their final match. He then later trains under Genkai, along with Shishi to enter the Makai Tournament.
- Makintaro (悪金太郎) a.k.a. Evil Kintaro (English manga) - The first fighter for Team Uraotogi, he had no enchanted items in battle. He fought against Hiei in the first round. Hiei took off his forearm so fast that Makintaro didn't notice until he pointed out. He then grew his "Axe Blade Fist" from his stump and slashed straight through Hiei... or so he thought. He truly only slashed through Hiei's afterimage. Hiei then skewered his sword from the top of his head straight down through his jaw, killing him instantly. His character is based on the tale of Kintaro.
- Kuro Momotaro (黒桃太郎 Kuro Momotarō) a.k.a. Poison Peach Boy (English manga) - He uses one of the first of many strange items from Team Uraotogi, enchanted Millet Dumplings. First he turns himself into a monstrous ape (Buju Soko: Maen No So (Beast Skin: Armor of the Demon Monkey), then a bird (Buju Soko: Machi No So (Beast Skin: Armor of the Demon Bird) and finally a dog (Buju Soko: Maken No So (Beast Skin: Armor of the Demon Dog). Before using each of these, he allows Hiei to attack him, thus learning each attacks' strengths and weaknesses so he knows what animal form can best counter it. Hiei defeats him using the Jaou Ensatsu Ken ("Sword of black fire"). His character is based on the tale of Momotarō.
- Ura Urashima (裏浦島) a.k.a. Reverse Urashima (English manga) - He fights Kurama in the Semi-Final. He tricks Kurama into believing that he's fighting against his will, and uses the Idunn Box (Reverse Treasure Box) in an attempt to turn him back into a helpless baby before killing him. The magic works too well however, turning Kurama back into the ruthless Yoko thief, who attempts to torture him to learn the secrets of the box and Team Uraotogi. He was killed by Shishiwakumaru before he could tell. His character is based on the tale of Urashima Tarō.
- Shishiwakamaru (English manga) or Shishi Wakamaru (English anime) (死々若丸) - He first fights Kuwabara and uses an item called the Cape of No Return, which sends its victim anywhere, even a different dimension (It's basically the same as Suzuka's dimension technique, except Shishiwakamaru needs the cloth in order to pull it off). He then fights against Genkai. He steals people's souls using his sword, the Ma Koku Mei Zan Ken (Banshee Shriek), using an attack called Bakuto Doku Shoku Sou (Chorus of a Thousand Skulls). He is defeated after Genkai used her Reihado-ken, stole some of his power, and then uses her Spirit Reflection Blast (Rei Kou Kyou Han Shyo). He then trains under her to enter the Makai Tournament and win his stardom. His name is a take on Ushiwakamura, a famous historic general, whose exploits are recounted in Noh theater. The Cape of No Return is based on a Hagoromo, also famous in Noh plays. His seiyuu is Toshiyuki Morikawa
[edit] Team Toguro
- Karasu (鴉) - Fights Kurama in the first round of the finals. At first Kurama believed that his power was to force his youki into another person's body, causing it to blow up from the inside. In reality his power allows him to create explosive demons resembling various explosive devices out of thin air (for example he creates bat-bombs, 'living TNT' etc.) which are invisible to anyone who's spirit awareness is not extremely high. In addition when his mask is removed he can charge his entire body with explosive energy by breathing in large amounts of oxygen from the air, he can then emit this energy as a massive explosion centered on himself though he is not harmed in the process. When he charges his body for this attack, his hair becomes blond. Karasu is a sadist who finds pleasure in torturing his victims slowly, often exploding parts of their bodies piece by piece before they die. He targets Kurama early in the tournament before their match, promising to destroy him painfully but not to harm his lovely face.
- Bui (武威) - Bui fights Hiei in the last round. At first he wears armor, and wields a massive axe which proves too clumsy for him to strike Hiei with. However, the true purpose of his armor is to control his energy, powering him down. The armor is also very heavy, weighing him down. Realizing he cannot win with his armor on he removes the armor, saying "I swore to take this off only to him." (referring to Younger Toguro), then his Spirit Class is moved from B- to B. Bui's true power is an energy field surrounding his body which is so powerful that causes him to hover above the ground. The field acts as a powerful defensive aura. He can also mold and throw this energy in order to attack. Unable to break through Bui's defenses, Hiei eventually attacks him with Dragon of the Darkness Flame (Jao Ensatsu Koku Ryuu Ha), but Bui deflects it with his aura and turns it back towards him. The Dragon of the Darkness Flame then seems to attack Hiei, but Hiei absorbs it instead, and becomes much more powerful. Hiei then easily defeats the now exhausted Bui, but when Bui asks Hiei to finish him off Hiei only replies "If you want to die, do it yourself. I don't take orders, especially from those I beat."
- Elder Toguro (戸愚呂(兄) Toguro Ani in Japanese) - The elder Toguro brother, he has the power to manipulate his body, forming any weapon from his body, stretching his limbs, or impaling his opponents with sharp extendable spikes that can emerge from any point on his body (though he seems to prefer using his hands for this purpose), and can move around his internal organs, making him difficult to kill. He can alter the appearance and size of any portion of his body, at one point he creates an entire body double of himself out of his hand which he uses to trick Kuwabara so he can attack him from behind. He fights Kuwabara during the final match of the Dark Tournament. Then, Younger Toguro kicks him out of the way and finishes him off for being too nosy. Also, he later returns after taking over the body of "Gourmet," at which point his regenerative powers are so strong that he is virtually immortal. Kurama defeats him by feeding him to a plant called the Sinning Tree (邪念樹 Janen Ju) that gradually absorbs the body/energy of its victims while torturing them with hallucinations until they die. Since Elder Toguro's body continues to regenerate after sustaining damage and is in a perpetual state of rage, the plant will continue to feed off his body forever while his mind is constantly focused on the hallucinations about his opponent. His hallucination is that he is killing Kurama who eerily isn't feeling a thing and isn't dying. The fact that Kurama is staying alive is what is making Elder Toguro so angry.
- Younger Toguro (戸愚呂(弟) Toguro Ototo in Japanese) - Toguro was once a human with unfathomable strength and power, even matching Genkai's strength. He was also Genkai's fighting and training partner, and her hinted love interest. But one night, after defeating a group of demons, he and Genkai were invited to a martial arts competition after a high-class demon called Kairen killed all of Toguro pupils. After Toguro killed Kairen in the final match of the Dark Tournament, he wished to become a demon of the highest class, like Kairen. Toguro betrayed Genkai and his friends for eternal youth and strength because he was scared of growing old and weak. Now, nearly 50 years later, he confronts Yusuke Urameshi and invites him to the Dark Tournament, fighting Genkai in the process and killing her for not making the same decision he did. Yusuke finds out about the 50-year conflict and it becomes very personal. He eventually kills Toguro with a fully charged Spirit Gun blast, winning the Dark Tournament, and returning home with his friends and Genkai. Despite his dark nature, there was a hidden side to Toguro, although he was Yusuke's enemy he was quite honorable. Despite his allegiance to Sakyo deep down Toguro felt empty from the path he had chosen and deeply wished to be killed by a strong opponent. This becomes apparent when Younger Toguro, who supposedly killed Kuwabara to draw out Yusuke's true power, had in fact deliberately spared Kuwabara. He also gave Genkai's body to Koenma to preserve it knowing that Yusuke would want to wish her back to life, when he won the tournament as per the tournament rules of granting the winning team any wish. Despite the atonement he had done, Younger Toguro still wanted for his soul to be sent to the Darkest Hell (Limbo in the English version) as punishment for his sins and neither Koenma or Genkai were able to convince him to change his mind. Younger Toguro's primary ability, like his brother, is 'body manipulation'. Although he is not capable of total regeneration like his older brother he is still able to 'mold' his body around attacks to some degree, making him extremely durable. In addition he is able to use his body manipulation to increase his physical strength to incredible levels. At 100% of his potential strength, he is strong enough to form powerful 'bullet like' shockwaves in the air with only the force of his thumb.
