Annie also tells Heaven that Luke loved his first wife and after she died in childbirth, he married Sarah after finding out she was pregnant with Tom, Heaven's brother. Heaven and her siblings, Tom, Fanny, Keith and Jane (or rather Our Jane) survive the hardscrabble life by staying to whatever resources the family has. Sarah become's pregnant and due to Luke's first stages of syphilis during the time of concievment, the child is born not only stillborn but having no top head nor genitals.
In her wealthy grandmother's house, Heaven dreamed of a wonderful new life - of new friends, the best schools, beautiful clothes and, most important, love. Soon she would make her family-name respectable, find her brothers and sisters, and have a family once again. However this is not to be due to her grandmother,Jillian's vanity and selfishness. Her step-grandfather, Tony is at oe point dignified and generous but at a other, controlling and domineering. The only person Heaven can talk to is Tony's brother,Troy, who has traces of depression. Heaven is given everything;fine clothes, a fine education and the support to go to college. However,Heaven is still unhappy due to the stipulation that Tony made. If Heaven sees her family again, Tony will pull all support. Heaven does not see them again but she does continue to write Tom and Fanny. After time, Troy and Heaven fall in love and plan to marry.
