DarkPlaces is one of the most advanced[citation needed] free software Quake engines. It has historically innovated most of the standard features which are later incorporated into other Quake engines.[citation needed] It also features an enhanced network code, with asychronous delta compression inspired by Tribes networking, and a built in server browser. It also features real time lighting and bump mapping and makes use of the OpenGL Shading Language.

DarkPlaces is actively developed by Forest "LordHavoc" Hale and contributors, it is based on the Quake source code.
