Darina Allen

    Darina Allen, (born 1951 in Portlaoise) is an Irish chef, TV personality and founder of Ballymaloe Cookery School in Shanagarry, County Cork, Ireland. A graduate of the Dublin Institute of Technology, she is the author of several successful books on the topic of Irish farmhouse cuisine. She is a leader of the Slow Food movement in Ireland. She lives on her organic farm, Kinoith, in Shanagarry. Many famous guests have visited Ballymaloe, including Jude Law, Sienna Miller and Queen Sonja of Norway to name just a few.

    She has also written a number of cookery books including

    She has recently published a definitive cookery guide The Ballymaloe Cookery Course ISBN 1-85626-410-6.

    Her daughter-in-law Rachel Allen currently presents a cookery programme on RTE1 and BBC1.

    In 2003 her husband Tim pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography and was sentenced to 240 hours of community service in lieu of a nine-month prison sentence and directed to pay €40,000 to a charity working with street children in Calcutta.
