Dara
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dara is a "First Name", used often in Ireland. It is derived from the Irish word for "Oak Tree". As a pre-Christian name, it is becoming popular as people see it as a way to mark the unique heritage of the Irish Celts. It may be used as a Male or Female first name and there are several variations of the spelling; Darragh, Daire, and Dara. Dara also has origins in Hebrew and there are some suggestions that its Hebrew meaning is "wisdom and compassion", however this is not entirely accurate. Rather, in Modern Hebrew, Dara is a conjugation of the verb "to live" and in Aramaic, Dara means interchangeably "pearl", mother-of-pearl" and "marble". In Cambodian Khmer, it is a unisex name meaning "star" and is a Hindu male name. Dara is also a nickname for Persian Darayavahush, meaning "possesses a lot; wealthy." Dara is Indonesian for "girl" and in Turkish, Dara means "leader".
