Darts was a nine-piece British pop group who also toured the US, where they issued an album "Darts Across America". They created very new versions of, typically, old doo-wop and rock and roll hits. Their strength was a line-up which combined very accomplished musicians with singers across the vocal range.
Their first single was Daddy Cool coupled with The Girl Can't Help it. It reached no. 6 in the British charts in December 1977. Three number 2 hits followed. The Guinness Book of British Hit Singles describes Darts (erroneously referred to in later years as The Darts by many - "The" never appeared in their genuine articles) as "Britain's best-known doo-wop vocal group".
Darts' failure to have a no. 1 hit means they have been virtually forgotten, despite their tremendous talent for playing live. (They were very popular choices for university balls and concerts.)Their hits do not feature on the many compilation CDs of the 70s and 80s, with the exception of "Boy From New York City". This track is listed on a double Rockabilly CD released in the late 90s. The CD title used "rockabilly" as a convenient label rather than as an accurate description of a whole host of 70s and 80s pop songs which did not fit into the glam rock category .
An early 80s musical, "Yakety Yak", featuring the songs of Lieber and Stoller, transferred briefly to London's West End in the early 80s, with Darts providing both the music and the singing.
