Dan Cameron is Senior Curator at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, a position he received in 1995. Cameron, based in New York since 1979, has organized such exhibitions as Extended Sensibilities (New Museum, 1982); Art and its Double (Fundacio 'La Caixa', Barcelona and Madrid, 1986-87); What is Contemporary Art? (Rooseum, Malmo, 1989); Modern Detour (Vienna Secession, 1990); The Savage Garden (Fundacio 'la Caixa,' Madrid, 1991); Future Perfect (Heilegenkreuzerhof, Vienna, 1993); Cocido y Crudo (Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid, 1994); Threshold (Fundacio Serralves, Oporto, 1995); and the 8th International Istanbul Biennial, 2003.
Since joining the New Museum, he has organized retrospective exhibitions on the work of Carolee Schneemann, Eugenio Dittborn, Cildo Meireles, Faith Ringgold, Marcel Odenbach, Martin Wong, David Wojnarowicz, Paul McCarthy, Jose-Antonio Hernandez-Diez, William Kentridge, and Carroll Dunham. He has also organized site-specific museum projects with such artists as Teresita Fernandez, Nedko Solakov, Hale Tenger, Maria Fernanda Cardoso, Doris Salcedo, Bili Bidjocka, Los Carpinteros, Rivane Neueschwander, Ana Prada, Xu Bing, Michael Smith and Joshua White, Francesco Vezzoli, Christian Marclay, Wim Delvoye and Antoni Abad. In 2003 he organized the international survey exhibition Living inside the Grid.
He has written extensively on contemporary art since 1981, including as contributor to Arts Magazine, Art & Auction, Artforum, Flash Art, Parkett and trans. He has published museum exhibition catalogues and monographic texts on numerous artists, including Janine Antoni, Stefano Arienti, Mathew Barney, Braco Dimitrijevic, Wim Delvoye, Willie Doherty, Jimmie Durham, Luis Gordillo, Peter Halley, Igor and Svetlana Kopystianski, John McCracken, Kiki Lamers, Yucef Merhi, Matt Mullican, Ernesto Neto, Daniel Oates, Marcel Odenbach, Pepon Ossorio, Perejaume, Pierre et Gilles, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Rosangela Renno, Alexis Rockman, Allen Ruppersberg, Edward Ruscha, Juliao Sarmento, Laurie Simmons, Serge Spitzer, Juan Usle, Xavier Veilhan, Meyer Vaisman, Sue Williams, and others. Museum catalogue texts by Cameron have been published by the Royal Academy of Arts, London; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Museum of Modern Art, Oxford; and many other institutions.
