The place is called "The Dangs", that is, plural forms. Dangs simly means "Difficult country", as in Hindi, "Danga". The Dangs was a bunch of tribal chiefdoms or petty kingdoms under British suzerainty, which acceded to the Indian Union after independence. It is the site of anti-Christian terrorism by Hindu organizations in 2002 and it is feared that the "Shabari Kumbh Mela" being held by them in this month (Feb 2006) will whip up further assaults on the Christian minorities of the Dangs.
