Apparently considerable thought and energy have gone into this. --Wetman 01:48, 27 May 2005 (UTC)
I have way too much free time for stuff like this. I'd love to know who first created the image. --uberzev
Yes, out of whose mind spawned this banana? --cactuar12 17:41, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

If someone wants to add the link to "news alert banana", the banana I created that's mentioned in this entry, here's the link. I'm pleased that he has found a place in terror alert banana lore. Rcade 16:39, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Origin
I believe the dancing banana may have originated in an emoticon set for a set of web forums -- the original authors of which may provide leads as to the original artist.

I always wondered where the dancing banana came from as it is a very popular emoticon on many forums. The article does not give much useful information, but the gif artist would be more than enough to ensure the status of this article. We need a really good researcher on the case!! --blueaster
Well, it reminds me of the Bitter Film Rejected, dunno which came first though
- I believe that the you are right and that it was for a web forum. At least they were used heavily in forums, usually with the keyword "". 2001 example: [1]. As to who exactly created it, I still do not know. (Also if it matters, the "Banana" flash was made in early in 2002.)
A friend of mine told me that a guy named "Kevin Bri... something" made it but he's not really reliable so I dont know... -King SweaterHead 04:10, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Meaning
So the central question remains unanswered: what does it mean? What does this emoticon *emote*? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 198.203.175.175 (talk • contribs) 21:20, 21 June 2006 (UTC).
- Quite. This page doesn't help me with my original reason for coming here, namely why the hell would I want a dancing banana on my forum posts? SaintedLegion 23:14, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

- I've always seen it as a direct reference to "Peanut Butter Jelly Time", one of those songs that gets stuck in your head and you want it to go away. As such, I would imagine that as an emoticon it indicates deliberately trying to annoy someone. On the other hand, it was probably first used primarily as simply the obvious... dancing glee. I don't know this for a fact though, just guessing.
- As per the icon's penetration into pop culture, I'd like to mention that it was used directly in that context in a "Family Guy" episode, where the dog dresses up as the bannana, dances, and sings the song. 204.78.11.41 19:57, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
"this emoticon *emotes*" the pleasure of food related comedy. It symbolizes comedy.
Or maybe a monkey made it I dont really know but the point is it is used to bring joy to the world. -King SweaterHead 04:13, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
Uh? Are you serious? I think it's clear it's used to express joy, happiness, mirth, celebration... you name it. BTW, I first met the dancing banana through its ubiquitous use on internet forums (just like that green smiley with a distorted face, called  at least in some forums, which must be as famous as this banana), far earlier than I knew about that Peanut Butter Jelly Time thing (I actually learnt about the flash video from this Wikipedia article), so to me the banana does not reference that silly flash animation and music, but viceversa, the animation references the famous smiley. 213.37.6.65 03:07, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
