[edit] Outline of the game

When George's friend, Katie Firestone, invites Nancy to Deception Island in the San Juan Islands of the Pacific Northwest for a whale-watching excursion, the sleuth arrives to find Katie's tour boat heavily vandalized. A threatening note warns Katie to "stop meddling." As Nancy investigates, she learns that the town of Snake Horse Harbor is up in arms over an orphaned Orca whale that recently appeared in the channel and has apparently decided to stay.

No one has yet figured out what pod she's from, and it seems that everyone has a different idea of what should be done about her. But one person seems to stand in way of everyone's plans: a meddling Katie Firestone! As Nancy begins to question her allies, a simple vandalism case begins to unfold into something more mysterious and sinister.

[edit] Story

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Upon her arrival on Snake Horse Harbor, Nancy discovers that Katie Firestone's boat has been vandalized, and her GPS has been wrecked in the process. Heading for the Hot Kettle Cafe, Nancy meets Holt Scotto, who gives Nancy a GPS after solving a quiz. Cafe owner Jenna Deblin reveals that Katie got into a dispute with the residents the previous night over what should happen to an orphaned Orca whale. It seems that there is no love lost between Jenna and Katie.

Heading back to Katie's boat, Nancy finds a message in a bottle by the kayak with a series of numbers and the word Rosebud. Exploring the surrounding sea, she finds two more bottles and finds a fourth by the lighthouse. Upon heading for the lighthouse, Holt appears and tells Nancy to stay away, making her suspicious. Jenna tells Nancy about a woman named Hilda Swenson, who she believes to be sending the messages.

Figuring out that the messages are co-ordinates, Nancy enters them on the GPS, which leads her to a new area of Snake Horse Harbor... a small beach. Exploring it, she finds a box with a puzzle on. Realizing the puzzle is related to the word "Rosebud", Nancy solves the puzzle and opens the box. There are three pieces of paper inside... a story, Port and Starboard directions, and a further note from Hilda, explaining that she wants Nancy to send her something from the lighthouse in Morse Code, the clues to what are in the letters.

Nancy realizes that the story is made up of words of the Greek Alphabet. Putting the letters of the words together makes the phrase "Ask HS JD AJ for Hilda's gift." Heading to the Hot Kettle Cafe, Nancy is requested to do some tasks by Holt and Jenna. Heading to Whale World, Nancy meets Andy Jason, a businessman who is obsessed with whales. He wants to buy out Katie's business, and also disagrees with her handling of the orca whale. After playing his Whale games, Nancy wins a Whale Watching Tour, and Andy then proceeds to show her his gift from Hilda. Returning to the Cafe, Nancy discovers that it's been burgled during Jenna's absence, with seemingly no sign of a break in. Examining the puzzles around the walls of the cafe, Nancy makes four Royal Flushes, and hears a mechanical noise. Taking closer inspection, Nancy discovers a secret passageway leading under one of the tables. Despite being eager to explore, she doesn't have a flashlight to do so.

Hilda's gifts consist of three phrases: "Onebum", "Tren", "Eleph". Using an anagram solver, Nancy discovers that Hilda wants her to send her her Telephone Number. After Morse Coding it from the lighthouse, Hilda phones Nancy and sets her a co-ordinate puzzle. After Katie provides a flashlight, Nancy explores the secret tunnel, which helps provide an answer to the puzzle. After discovering the co-ordinates, Nancy is led to a buoy in the sea, containing a black box and a red button. Nancy is phoned again and hints to explore the secret tunnel, using the Port and Starboard sheet found earlier to help. After a long exploration, Nancy finds some more co-ordinates on a rock. She also discovers a door with a snake puzzle. After figuring out the puzzle, Nancy hears a binging noise from above, and realizes that she knows where the other half of the puzzle is.

Heading out to the new co-ordinate location, Nancy pushes the red button and another buoy floats up from the seabed containing a box with some binoculars. Hilda phones Nancy one final time and reveals that when she left the Harbor, she left behind her notebook, which revealed all about the secret passageways and her notes on Benjamin Hawkins, a sailor who kept vanishing mysteriously centuries ago. She tells Nancy that somebody is misusing it for their own gain. Before bidding a final farewell, she tells Nancy to check Andy's ship-in-a-bottle.

Heading for Whale World, Nancy checks the ship, but finds nothing suspicious about it. However, using the binoculars reveals three symbols on the sails. Nancy is puzzled as to their significance... but follows her one final lead. Heading for the lighthouse, Nancy discovers a ladder leading to the other half of the door puzzle. Solving it opens the door, and also a trap door in the room. Climbing down the ladder of the trapdoor leads Nancy to the Sea Caves. Nancy figures that Benjamin Hawkins must've used the trapdoor to hide away, and then finds a puzzle on the wall relating to the three mysterious symbols. Cracking the puzzle reveals a mechanism, which opens a fake wall in the caves.

Kayaking to the cave reveals hidden goods, diving equipment, an orca harness and crates. Nancy realizes that the crates are connected to a piece of wood she found earlier. After knocking in an oxygen tank in the water, the orca appears and playfully throws it back. After throwing the ball a few times and the orca bouncing it back, Nancy realizes that the orca is not wild, it's been trained... somebody's been using it to retrieve smuggled goods from a shipwreck! Upon leaving, Nancy is shocked by a pair of gloves on a crate, embedded with the name "Firestone"...

Katie's boat has vanished when Nancy returns, furthering her suspicions that Katie is indeed the guilty party, and has been deceiving the members of Snake Horse Harbor. Desperately running out of time, Holt and Jenna refuse to help, but Andy is curious and agrees to sail Nancy out to the point where the ship sunk. Upon kayaking closer, Nancy finds a big ship. Sneaking aboard, she overhears that the Orca is planning one final dive for smuggled goods.

Stealthily sneaking around the ship, Nancy reaches a section of the ship with a waterlogged section in which the orca appears. Crossing the room, Nancy finds an area where Katie is seated. Turning the chair around, Nancy discovers Katie is bound and gagged. She reveals that she tried to approach the ship on her boat, but they rammed her boat and kidnapped her. Upon hearing a noise, Nancy dashes and hides, and watches as the true culprit enters the room... Andy Jason!

Nancy dashes out and tries to escape, but the escape door is sealed. Nancy bluffs that she guessed who it was all along, but Andy isn't convinced and prepares to kill Nancy. However, quick thinking, she throws a nearby oxygen tank into the water, and the Orca appears and bounces it back, landing on Andy's head and knocking him unconscious. Holt arrives with the coastguard at the perfect moment to help Nancy and Katie return to shore.

Andy and his henchmen were arrested after it is revealed their plan was to recover smuggled animal furs from the ship wreckage. Holt, Katie and Jenna make their peace with each other, before Nancy heads back home. Before leaving, a black creature emerges from the sea before disappearing forever. Nancy suspects that it's a certain somebody saying a final goodbye...

Spoilers end here.
