Danforth is a town in Washington County, Maine, United States. The population was 629 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 157.7 km² (60.9 mi²). 140.9 km² (54.4 mi²) of it is land and 16.8 km² (6.5 mi²) of it (10.64%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 629 people, 263 households, and 175 families residing in the town. The population density was 4.5/km² (11.6/mi²). There were 544 housing units at an average density of 3.9/km² (10.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 99.68% White, 0.16% Native American and 0.16% Asian.
There were 263 households out of which 28.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.4% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.1% were non-families. 30.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.84.
In the town the population was spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 27.7% from 45 to 64, and 21.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 101.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $20,769, and the median income for a family was $25,341. Males had a median income of $32,083 versus $17,083 for females. The per capita income for the town was $11,079. About 21.6% of families and 23.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 27.2% of those under age 18 and 18.4% of those age 65 or over.
