Dandupalya is a small village situated near Bangalore on the Bangalore-Chennai National Highway four. The village lies to the left as you drive from Hoskote towards Bangalore. The village is no different from any other village in the region

The village is mainly populated by Kurubas, Vokkaligas and Dalits, with small numbers of people from other different communities. The main occupation of majority of villagers is agriculture.

The sleepy village unknown to rest of the world was suddenly in news for all the wrong reasons. A group of Dalits from the village started committing crimes like Robbery, Dacoity and murders. For about three years between 1999 and 2001 dandupalya became a household name in the state of Karnataka.
[edit] The Dandupalya Gang
The gang consisted of both men, women and children. The main tactic of tf the gang was to zero in on an house and watch the activities of the members and when they find the right time when there are less people in the house then the gang would attack the house, kill the people by slitting their throats and make away with the money and other valuables. The slitting of throats of their victims became a trade mark of the dandupalya gang and about 75 murders and the same number dacoities were done by the gang. The bangalore police had to set up a special branch to deal with the gang.

The core members of the gang were arrested and were sentenced to life term in jail for their crimes. The six convicted were Dodda Hanuma alias Hanuma; Krishna alias Dandupalya Krishna alias Hosakote Krishna; Chinnappa; Venkatram; Munikrishna; and Thimma alias Kothi Thimma. Though some believe that the number of people in the gang were anywhere between 20-100.
