[edit] Synopsis

This documentary shows the in-depth making of the dance scenes of Oliver Stone’s movie Alexander which was released in November 2004 in the United States, from the first contact with the choreographer to the final spectacular dance parts shown in the movie. More specifically, the documentary is going through the elaboration of the two main choreographies of Roxana and Bagoas' dances to their development as well as the choice of the actors and the dancers.

Suzanne Gielgud, the director of Dancing For Oliver is the wife of Piers Gielgud, the British choreographer, who narrates the story, which is also his own. Suzanne, who’s also a casting director, has been able to follow the dance developments from day to day during the more than six months peregrinations of the choreographer and the dancers.

Dancing For Oliver attempts to describe the stages of the realization of the sensual dance of Roxana (Rosario Dawson), first wife of Alexander (Colin Farrell) and especially the very erotic one of Bagoas (Francisco Bosch), his eunuch and favourite. In the first part, the film reveals an insight of the first contacts made with Piers Gielgud, the first tests filmed and presented on tape to Oliver Stone. Following Stone’s acceptance, the film concentrates on the true work, the choice of the dancers, in particular Bagoas, interpreted by the exceptional Francisco Bosch, dancer at the English National Ballet.

The choreographies are detailed, commented on and dissected carefully by the choreographer and Oliver Stone, interviewed by Suzanne, which explained, mostly, what is to dance for Oliver. Details of the generally unknown work of the dancers are put in parallel with the dance scenes as shown in film which are thus reconstituted in their totality.

The multiple dance scenes in the documentary are illustrated by interviews of Oliver Stone, the director, of Vangelis, the musician of the film score and of Francisco Bosch, the fascinating actor/dancer and charismatic star of this documentary.
