DDR 2ndMIX, or DDR 2nd Mix, is the second game in the Dance Dance Revolution series of music video games. It was released as an arcade game by Konami on January 19, 1999. Although only officially released in Japan, units exist worldwide. It has a total of 32 songs: ten from the original Dance Dance Revolution arcade game and 22 all-new songs.

[edit] Gameplay
The basic gameplay of DDR 2nd Mix follows the rest of the Dance Dance Revolution series. One player can play using one dance pad (Single mode), two players can play using one dance pad each (Versus mode), or one player can play using both dance pads (Double mode). There is also Couple mode, which gives each player different step patterns that complement each other. Couple mode is only available on 2nd Mix and its variations, but later inspired Unison mode in 3rd Mix, and Battle mode in 4th Mix.
A player must step to the beat, matching the beat to the arrows presented to them on screen by stepping on arrows on a metal-and-acrylic glass dance stage. A judgment is displayed for each step, depending on the player's timing: "PERFECT!!", "GREAT!", "GOOD", "BOO" or "MISS..". An on-screen life meter, known as the Dance Gauge, begins halfway full at the start of each song. Perfect and Great steps slowly fill the Gauge, while Boo and Miss steps quickly deplete it. Good steps have no effect either way. If a player accumulates too many Boos or Misses, and the Dance Gauge becomes empty, the player fails the song and the game ends.
A player may play anywhere from one to five songs (not including extra stages), depending on how many the arcade operator sets the machine to play each game. At the end of each song, the player sees their accumulated points, bonus points, and how many of each kind of step they stepped. They also get a letter grade that is dependent on the judgments received during play, ranging from "SS" (all steps Perfect or Great with at least 50% Perfects) to "E" (failure). If the player manages to pass his or her songs, a cumulative results screen is given, totalling the stats from all played stages.
The scoring system is unchanged from 1st Mix.
[edit] Interface and graphics
The song-selection interface of DDR 2nd Mix is mostly unchanged from 1st Mix: a jukebox-like menu of CDs represents the available songs, and various "step codes" can be performed on this screen to modify arrow arrangement, appearance, and pattern difficulty (Basic, Another, Maniac). The "spinning CD" loading screens from 1st Mix have been replaced with text displaying the player's progress (such as "1st Stage", "2nd Stage", "Final Stage"). The interface transitions between screens are also smoother.
During gameplay, 3D-rendered dancing characters appear in the background of each song. Different characters can be selected at the main title screen by standing on either the Left or Right arrow panels while pressing the green start button.
The arrows in DDR 2nd Mix do not have different color-cycles based on their time signature. The "Vivid" arrow colors familiar to players of later mixes were not introduced until Club Version.
[edit] Other arcade versions of 2nd Mix
[edit] Link Version
Dance Dance Revolution 2ndMIX LINK VERSION, released on April 21, 1999, introduced the ability for players to save high scores and play custom step edits using their PlayStation 1 memory cards. A player would first need to format the memory card with "Link Data" using the home version of 2nd Mix, and then insert the card into one of two slots on the front of the arcade cabinet. This feature has been implemented on most later arcade versions. Link Version includes 5 new songs, in addition to the full 2nd Mix song list.
[edit] Club Version 1
Dance Dance Revolution 2ndMIX with beatmaniaIIDX CLUB VERSiON, or Club Version 1, was also released on April 21, 1999. It has a completely different song list from 2nd Mix, instead featuring all 13 songs from beatmania IIDX CLUB VERSiON. The two arcade machines are designed to be linked to each other, allowing simultaneous play by two to four players (up to two on each machine). One song is selected by the IIDX player(s), and is then played on both machines. For the DDR player(s), only one difficulty is available for each song, although there is a different step set for Doubles mode. If a player on either machine fails the song, play continues as long as at least one player is passing.
Club Version 1 also introduced Vivid mode, which changes the color-cycling for arrows based on their placement within each bar of music. This allows players to better time their steps based on visual information, and has been enabled by default in most subsequent DDR games.
[edit] Club Version 2
Dance Dance Revolution 2ndMIX with beatmaniaIIDX substream CLUB VERSiON 2 was released on July 27, 1999, and is able to link with beatmaniaIIDX substream. Both machines contain 42 songs, including the 13 from DDR Club Version 1. Club Version 2 allows the DDR player(s) to change the step pattern difficulty before each song, between Basic, Another, and Maniac (or just Basic and Another for Doubles mode). Song selection can be done on either machine, but the game now ends if any one of the players fails the song.
Club Version 2 also introduces the Catastrophic level of difficulty for 9-foot songs.
[edit] Home versions
Dance Dance Revolution 2ndReMIX, the home version of DDR 2nd Mix, was released in Japan on August 26, 1999, for the Sony PlayStation video game console. It includes 34 songs, seven of which are hidden and unlockable. Four of the songs were previews of the next arcade version, Dance Dance Revolution 3rdMIX.
Later in 1999, Dance Dance Revolution 2ndReMIX APPEND CLUB VERSiON vol.1 and Dance Dance Revolution 2nd ReMIX APPEND CLUB VERSiON vol.2 were released in Japan for the PlayStation. Each of these has about half the songs of Club Version 2 (arcade). Unfortunately,DDR CLUB VERSION 1 is defective, the Append Disc can be loaded but features such as Information, Edit, etc do not work and the arrows tend to go out of sync. only DDR CLUB VERSION 2 can able to play and functions properly.
On February 17, 2000, Konami released a version of Dance Dance Revolution 2ndMIX for the Sega Dreamcast console. It features 43 songs, seven of which are hidden and unlockable. The song list includes seven songs from DDR 3rd Mix.
On April 27, 2000, Konami released Dance Dance Revolution CLUB VERSiON Dreamcast Edition for the Sega Dreamcast. They took advantage of the larger media format for Dreamcast and consolidated the two DDR 2nd Mix Club Versions into one game.
A few of the songs in DDR 2nd Mix were included in the U.S. version of Dance Dance Revolution for the Sony PlayStation.
[edit] Soundtrack
The original soundtrack for DDR 2nd Mix was produced by Toshiba-EMI under their Dancemania dance music brand. It featured 32 of the songs in the game. It was released on April 28, 1999.
