Dan Shanoff

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dan Shanoff is a former writer for ESPN.com's Page2 section who now runs his own sports blog. Every weekday morning between January 6, 2003 and August 31, 2006, Monday through Friday, he put out a "Daily Quickie" article, in which he discussed the important sports happenings from the previous day and those that played that day or soon. He also interjected his own opinion and commentary about the topics he discussed. One of Dan's signature traits in his writing is his love of 'Instant History,' meaning that whatever took place yesterday in sports is generally the most important thing to ever happen.

[edit] Daily Quickie

In addition to the "Daily Quickie" article, Dan ran a daily chat from 9am-10am Eastern Time called the Morning Quickie (or MQ). This included a discussion about the sports Studs and Duds from the previous day. He also did occasional "Hot/Not Hot" columns for ESPN.com where he discussed what would be popular and not popular in a coming sports season or year.

On August 31, 2006 he posted the final Daily Quickie column and retired the Morning Quickie chat. The final Morning Quickie drew emotional reactions from regulars, who spent much of the hour reminiscing.

On September 1st, 2006 he started a new blog site on Blogspot, where he continues to provide analysis of sporting events.

Shanoff has declined to give an explanation for his departure from ESPN, although he said the departure was cordial.

[edit] NCAA Mens Quickie Pool

During the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament he ran a Quickie Office Pool on ESPN.com, encouraging readers to sign up their brackets for the office pool to compete against other Quickie readers and himself.

[edit] Shanoff Curse

Also popular with Quickie Regulars was the "Shanoff Curse". This curse will apply to any team Dan Shanoff picked to win a given sporting event, especially in NFL and NCAA Men's Basketball. However the curse did not apply to individual sporting events such as horse racing. His most famous "curse" moment was headlining a column "Two Words: It's. Over." the morning after the Yankees won Game 3 of the American League Championship Series against the rival Red Sox in 2004. The Red Sox subsequently rolled off four straight wins, beating the Yankees in the best of seven ALCS. When Dan's 2006 preseason Super Bowl pick of Indianapolis Colts vs. Chicago Bears came true in early 2007, he claimed the Curse was over, although the Quickie had officially ended his stint ESPN by that point.

[edit] Family

Recently he and his wife (affectionately referred to as "Mrs. Quickie") had their first child who was named Gabe, despite efforts by the Morning Quickie Regulars to have him named after Joakim Noah. His wife grew up in Gainesville, Florida, and Dan converted into a University of Florida sports fan, joining his fan allegiance to Northwestern, his college alma mater. He also has an MBA from Harvard Business School.
