1995-2006 Iowa State Head Coach

Dan McCarney (born July 28, 1953, in Iowa City, Iowa) was the head football coach at Iowa State University from 1995-2006. He was the longest tenured head coach in the Big 12 Conference when he stepped down November 8, 2006[1]. At his resignation press conference McCarney was quoted as saying, "Some People see things as they are and say why? I dream things that never were and say why not? When I took this job I said why not Iowa State? Why not winning? Why not bowl games? Why not sell outs? Why not national respect? Why not us? Why not here? Why not the cyclone family?" These words capture what many people feel about Iowa State Football and Coach McCarney. He led the Cyclones to five bowl games, more than any other Iowa State coach in history. He lead ISU to their first every bowl victory in 2000 against the University of Pittsburgh at the Insight bowl. In the same year he lead ISU to their best record ever at 9-3 and 5-3 in the Big 12 conference. The next year ISU made it to the Independece bowl and lost to Alabama 14-13 on a controversial call on a field goal that would have won the game. In 2002 McCarney lead ISU to a 6-1 start with QB Seneca Wallace has the front runner for the Heisman Trophy. Unfortunately ISU would would finish the year 7-7 but again make a Bowl game for the third straight year. In 2005, McCarney would lead ISU to the Independence Bowl against Miami (OH). ISU won 17-14. It was arguable McCarney's best coaching job as ISU started the season 2-5 but would win 5 straight games to end the season including the first victory at Kansas State in years. In 2005, McCarney lead ISU to the Houston Bowl where ISU lost 27-24. The year was marked by never before seen success. The season started against #8 Iowa as ISU was big underdogs. However, ISU was able to win 23-3 in dominating fashion. ISU forced 5 Iowa turnovers with Iowa's offense never crossing their own 20 yard line. ISU then went on to win at College Station, Texas against Texas A&M. It was ISU first ever win in College Station as ISU won 42-14. Todd Bylthe had 4 touchdown receptions in the game. Unfortunately ISU would loss 3 overtime games that season that prevented ISU from winning the Big 12 north. McCarney turned the cyclones into one the best Big 12 teams even though when he arrived at Iowa State there was almost nothing to build on. He built the program from the ground up and his importance to the ISU program cannot be understated. McCarney will always be a Cyclone.

On February 6, 2007, McCarney accepted a position as the Defensive Line Coach and Assistant Head Coach at the University of South Florida[2].

Before taking over the head coaching position at Iowa State, McCarney played at the University of Iowa from 1972-1974 and was named team captain in 1974. McCarney was an assistant coach at Iowa from 1977-1989 and the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at the University of Wisconsin under Barry Alvarez from 1990-1994.

Dan and his ex-wife, Brenda, have three children Jill, Melanie, and Shane. Their daughter, Melanie, is currently a student at Iowa State. Dan is married to Margy McCarney today.
