Multi-millionaire Ezra Ounce, who's main cause in life is to start a national morality campaign, wants to be assured his fortune will be inherited by upstanding relatives, so he visits his cousin, Matilda Hemingway. What Ounce really finds offensive are musical comedy shows and the people who put them on, and it just so happens that Matilda's daughter, Barbara is dancer and singer, and is in love with a struggling showman, Jimmy Higgens.

Matilda's husband, Horace, becomes involved in the musical troupe after he meets a showgirl named Mabel. He gives her some money and a his business card with a not telling her to not mention their meeting to anyone. But when Mabel discovers that Horace is Barbara's father, she decides to blackmail Horace for more money to back Jimmy's show.
