Damariscotta River

Damariscotta River is a relatively short river in Maine that empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Damariscotta is an old Abenaki word for "river of many fishes". There are 2,500-year-old oyster shell middens (heaps) along the banks of the Damariscotta River, which is a tidal estuary of the Gulf of Maine.

The Damariscotta River is fed from the ponds of Jefferson, Maine and Nobleborough, Maine. It flows southward between Newcastle, Maine, Edgecomb, Maine and Boothbay, Maine on the west and Bristol, Maine on the east. It is a navigable river for about 16 miles inland, to the bridge between Newcastle, Maine and Nobleborough. It is important in local commerce, and the location of shipbuilding and used to transport lumber.^[1]
