Dalton Holme
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Situated along the B1248 road the civil parish of Dalton Holme is made up of two villages - South Dalton and Holme on the Wolds which over the years have come to join together. Both the villages are run by the Dalton Estate owned by the Hotham Family and are occupied by estate workers as well as paying tenants. The 18th Century Hall is the home of Lord Hotham who’s family have owned land in the area for generations.
The beautiful spire of St. Mary's the 19th Century Church is over 200 feet high and can be seen for miles around. Inside the church lie a number of the Hotham family and there is a fine black and white marble monument in memory of John Hotham which is said to have come from Italy. A knight in full armour and helmet and gauntlet is stood beside him.
Dalton Estate Office can be found in the village of South Dalton and all the Estate houses are neat rows of cottages as well as Tudor type houses some with date plates on them dating as far back as 1706.
The local public house is the fine looking Pipe and Glass Inn which is situated near to gates leading into land that surrounds the Hall at the bottom of the village.
