Dalston, Cumbria

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dalston is a village in the English county of Cumbria. It is situated on the B5299 road about four miles (6 km) south-south-west of Carlisle city centre.

The village has a church and a few shops, including a small Co-op and a post office, which are centred around the small village square. It also has a bakery and sandwich shop called Crumbs, which began business in 2006. Both businesses are popular with the children from the local secondary school Caldew which has about 1000 pupils. Pupils in Years 11, 12, and 13 are allowed off the school premises to visit the village, and help maintain Dalston's thriving economy. Also there is a solicitors office called Wragg Mark-Bell situated in the Square.

The village is on the River Caldew and is served by the Dalston railway station on the Cumbrian Coast Line. There are two schools in the village, and just outside the village there is a Nestlé beverage factory.

Dalston was the birthplace of sculptor Musgrave Watson (born in 1804).
