Dalhalla Opera

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dalhalla Opera is a summer opera company located 7km north of the town of Rättvik in central Sweden and 280km north of Stockholm. The open-air theatre is located in a large crater created by the fall of a meteor onto the earth.

The “Draggängarna”, a former limestone quarry (where mining has now created a natural amphitheatre of 400 metres long by 175 metres wide and 60 metres deep) is a unique stage setting in an ancient limestone quarry with exceptional acoustical qualities, comparable to the best outdoor stages in Europe. The first concert was held in 1993.

The meteor fall created Lake Siljan, and it is claimed to be one of only three places in the world where one can clearly see how the natural landscape has been affected by meteoric impact. (Another is located in Arizona USA; a third is supposedly located in Russia).

Dalhalla presents 20-30 events each summer, from June to the beginning of September with a combination of opera, choral works, and jazz and popular concerts making up the balance of the program. In 2005, guest performers came from the Bolshoi Theatre Moscow and Mikis Theodorakis celebrated his 80th birthday.

In the immediate area, the Jussi Björling Museum is located.
