Dalgety ( 36°30′S, 148°50′E) is a small town in New South Wales Australia, in Snowy River Shire It is located on the banks of the Snowy River between Melbourne and Sydney. Its name comes from the maiden name of the wife of J R Campbell, the surveyor who laid out the township. The area was known as `Buckleys Crossing` as early as 1837. It was also known as "Barnes Crossing" after Barnes settled there in 1848. The village was gazetted in 1880. (from Geographical Names Board of New South Wales)

It was once an important river crossing along a stock route from Gippsland to the Snowy Mountains High Country dating back to the 1840's. It was known as a friendly meeting place for Indigenous Australians of the South East as they made their way up to the High Country in pursuit of the Bogong Moths.

Dalgety was originally selected as the site of Australia's National Capital, but was replaced by Canberra in 1911, some say due to its proximity to Victoria. Situated on the Monaro Plains and in the rain shadow of the Snowy Mountains, Dalgety is a relatively dry area of rolling hills with granite boulders scattered across the landscape.
