[edit] Coaching career
Steele joins the Campbell athletics staff after spending the last two years as assistant head coach and running backs coach at Elon University.
"It’s a dream come true for my family and me and a tremendous opportunity," said Steele. "As a family, we are so excited that we have been given this opportunity to be a part of a special time in the history of Campbell University with the reinstatement of football after a 56-year absence. We are very thankful to Dr. Wallace, Stan Williamson and the Campbell family for selecting us to come to Buies Creek during such an exciting time in the university’s history."[citation needed]
A member of NCAA Division I since 1977 and of the Atlantic Sun Conference since 1994, Campbell will compete in football against similar non-scholarship programs on the Division I and non-I levels. Home games will be played at a yet to be constructed on-campus site.
Previously, Steele was Assistant Head Coach at Elon University in North Carolina. He came to Elon from East Tennessee State University where he was also the assistant head coach of the wide receivers and the punt team.

He helped Tulane to advance to the 1980 Hall of Fame Bowl, marking his first collegiate postseason appearance as a coach. As a player, Steele competed four seasons (1970-73) as an offensive guard and a defensive tackle for Autauga County High School (Prattville, Ala.) and a pair of campaigns (1973-74) as a walk-on offensive lineman for the University of South Carolina.

He worked six seasons at ECU (1989-1994), coaching the wide receivers and helping the Pirates in both the 1991 Peach Bowl and the 1994 Liberty Bowl.
After that Steele was the head coach and director of athletics at Northern Nash Senior High School (Rocky Mount, N.C.) for four years (1995-98). Then he moved on to Baylor University, where he served as wide receivers coach from 1999-2002. Kevin Steele (Dale's brother) was head coach at Baylor during that time period.
