[edit] Church of Misery
I began an article on this band, Church of Misery, and this user not only listed it for speedy deletion, but he was quite rude to me after I explained why it doesn't meet WP:CFD. I am thinking about taking this to Wikipedia:Requests for mediation. Please help, and leave your response on my talk page. Thanks for your help. --Eastlaw 07:03, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] In re: Church of Misery
Thank you, muchos gracias, merci beaucoup, etc. for your assistance. Let me know if you need any help with anything in the future. :)
I usually work on law-related articles (as I am a 3rd year law student), so I am somewhat less familiar with the difficulties of music-related articles. I recognize that som unscrupulous people use Wikipedia to promote their bands. However, I did not anticipate running into such an issue in this case. Nonetheless, Mr Spunky Toffee's behavior was inappropriate and highly objectionable, so I thank you again for assisting me in this matter. --Eastlaw 07:19, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] User:SourceIndustries
Can you please take a look at this user? All of his edits, and even his user page, consist of attacks on a company that he feels is a scam. This may well be true, but given that he provides no evidence, this could be regarded as defamation. Even his user name is probably inappropriate. If you could take a look and offer your opinion, I would appreciate it. Thanks. ---Charles 18:46, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

- Y'know, occasionally I worry that there are a number of potentially good editors out there who get off on the wrong foot, and then get scared off when we come down on them for their mistakes. This poor fellow may have been very well-intended, but may never make another contribution. How do we balance the concern for decent editing with the imperative not to "kick the newbies," as it were? ---Charles 17:53, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

- I appreciate your insight and concern. I doubt that he/she would have any useful contributions at the rate he/she was going. Most of the edits this user made have been deleted, The userpage is an attack on a website [1] and the username is a website name so possibly the username could be blocked on that alone. The talk page contains warnings [2]about deleted attack articles (I read the deleted content). Sometimes editors do start off on the wrong foot. I have not gotten an email from the user. Would not say the edits were decent/indecent but they were unencyclopedic yes. If user wishes to change the username and make useful contributions they would be welcome back.--Dakota 02:44, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- I certainly was not offering that as any kind of criticism of your actions, you may rest assured. I was speaking in generalities, really. In this case, I believe you are correct, this editor is unlikely to have ever been a helpful contributor. More than anything, I am concerned about my own actions---specifically, my tendency to be judgmental and to jump to conclusions that are, with hindsight, unfair. Those of us who edit often and with regularity would do well to consider that others are much slower learners. Well, I know that I certainly need to keep that in mind. Thanks for your time and your thoughts. ---Charles 18:01, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- No problem. I don't see that you were over judgemental in that particular case. That editor appears to have come for a single purpose. As I previously stated I have not heard back from them. I hope they do return with a new username and contribute usefully.--Dakota 18:09, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] LIst of artworks
Hi!
One of my fav wiki pages was that of the "List of artworks". It was a good page with links to many notable paintings. Now that it is deleted I find my springboard to a whole new range of paintings/artworks missing. Earlier with the help of the list, I could click away and know/learn about paintings that I never knew about. But deletion of the list makes it impossible to know about other artworks unless I know their names ansd search for them. Could we have the page back or at least moved to something like "List of famous paintings" or something. In any case, a list of famous paintings makes things a lot easier than searching! could we have the page back?
[edit] 50th Anniversary of the Granma
Hi Dakota -- Since 2 December this year will mark cincuenta años since the landing of the Granma in Cuba, I thought it might be good to have it included in the Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/December 2. During the past 24 hours Zleitzen and I have collaborated to improve the article about the Granma which had been in a rather deplorable state. I hope (but am not at all sure) that we have raised it to the level that would justify its being a link for a "Selected Anniversary". I was wondering if you might take a look at it and, if you feel it merits inclusion, perhaps you could add it to the Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/December 2 list? (As I understand it, only an admin can made additions to this list.) Or, if you notice parts of it that need more work, please point them out I will hasten to address them ... Many thanks! -- Polaris999 06:15, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Username block
Hi DakotaKahn, I just saw this in the active blocks log:
- 19:22, 14 November 2006, DakotaKahn (Talk) blocked #304426 (expires 19:22, 15 November 2006) (Unblock) (Autoblocked because your IP address was recently used by "ريال مدريد". The reason given for ريال مدريد's block is: "".)
- 19:22, 14 November 2006, DakotaKahn (Talk) blocked ريال مدريد (contribs) (infinite, account creation blocked) (Unblock) (username non latin characters)
I take it you really only intended the username block, so I lifted the autoblock. BTW, the Arabic name means "Real Madrid" if I'm not mistaken, which doesn't really sound like an account with abusive intent. Fut.Perf. ☼ 19:32, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

- Hi again, I can not read arabic. Is that a poem on your page, it looks somwhat familiar strange as it seems for a non speaker.--Dakota 20:00, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
By the way, the same autoblock thing also happened to User:Øø (who isn't even non-Latin, strictly speaking), and apparently a few others you did username blocks for. What combination of blocking flags do you use? I'm quite green as an admin and I'm not sure, but wasn't there some way of blocking an account and letting them nevertheless create new ones? After all, that's basically what we are asking them to do when we say {usernameblock}. Fut.Perf. ☼ 20:17, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
-
- You know you have brought a good question. I just checked and it is that all the boxes (at least on this machine) are automatically checked.
- Block anonymous users only
- Prevent account creation
- Automatically block the last IP address used by this user, and any subsequent addresses they try to edit from
Going to have to check that more closely.--Dakota 20:26, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi Dakota, Good to seee the Zappa quote there - I even got myself some Captain Beefheart cds recently! OK so I am a bad correspondent - havent kept up - but I have been watching the Gary Lucas article - and it really is bascially being fed from a red link that has claimed in the past to be someone with the ok from the artist to put the stuff up (!!) It is very chatoic and unencyclopediac - but I am not completely au fait with his mates and millieau - I suspect someone over your way with good knowledge of the music scene could use a good mop/scissors on the art - and I was wondering if you knew of anyone into the music who might have a go? I may alert another friend who might know more as well - but I thought you might be able to help or know someone into the music so to speak! It really does need a cleanup! [edit] Bitterkomix
Der DakotaKahn:
I regret that you deleted the entry on Bitterkomix. I saw that there was a question of notability but I thought it did not apply to the bitterkomix article because it dealt with books. Bitterkomix is a serial comic that deals with sensetive political issues in South Africa like the lingering effects of apartheid, race, and class. Moreover, its founders are artists who are becoming noteworthing in their own right, as evidenced by the sources first to the New York Times and second to an art website, they also have showing in New York. Finally I have no connection to bitterkomics, I just thought it would help show the range of the comic medium.

[edit] I've lifted an autoblock of yours
Hi Dakota, You recently blocked C.lettingaAntivandal (talk • contribs), presumably for a username violation. This was created by C.lettinga (talk • contribs) as a vandal fighting account, independent of his content-creating account. C.lettinga is a new, but good faith editor with no record of vandalism. I'm familiar with his editing and believe he simply never considered that such an account name might violate policy. Anyway, I concur with the block of his new account, but I have lifted the autoblock on his IP, to permit him to continue editing with his regular account (see here). I hope this is fine with you. [edit] laromlab deletion
hi dakota,
you posted a speedy deletion of my page pn laromlab, and i write to you to invite you to please reinvestigate the page because it is not like the previous entry on Laromlab. The previous page may have very well been considered personal promotion but the "new" laromlab page is anything but personal promotion. It simply states facts about a musical artist that has contributed to a thriving underground music scene, thanks for your consideration in not delteing this page!

- You might consider taking it to Wikipedia:Deletion review it's a db/repost Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Laromlab. I am not going to delete it.--Dakota 05:05, 25 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Howdy Dakota!
Hey...Merry Xmas, DK...just ran across something odd...look at this edit record [14]. I think this user may be related to the one you just blocked that was leaving all the test 4 warnings. What do you think? --Kukini 05:42, 25 December 2006 (UTC)
- Thought it was a bit odd. Hope all is very well with you and yours! --Kukini 06:05, 25 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] mistake?
mistake? West Brom 4ever 18:40, 25 December 2006 (UTC)
- Who are you? This is state I left the article [15] in so I don't think so. Anyway I reverted and fixed a couple of vandalism. I don't see any edits to the article from your username. Sorry if i am mistaken.--Dakota 18:45, 25 December 2006 (UTC)
- i was just tracking some articles and users and saw the edit on Amina Haq. i realized already before that you corrected the article and must admit it is very good job, but as i said, i just noticed your mistaken revert. sorry for the inconvenience and keep it up. [edit] Thanks
Thanks for noticing the note left in my archives and removing it. However, I try to keep all messages unless they uncomprehensible vandalism, so I put it back and added an {{unsigned}} thing. In any case, I am thankful that you were looking out for me. Cheers, The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 05:49, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
