[edit] Marijuana Wiki

Hi there,

I see that you are a pro-Cannabis Wikipedian so I hope this will be of some interest to you.

I've started a Marijuana wiki (aka The Sticky Wiki) which I think you might be interested in. I'm hoping you can help me get started with this project. Whereas lots of articles about weed get speedy-deleted on Wikipedia, they would be totally cool over at MarijuanaWiki. But really I want the site to be more of a marijuana community than merely an encyclopedia.

To give you an example, I want to have city guides about where to score, find pot-friendly cafes, marijuana events, and what represents a good price in that city. Etc. (You can check out the featured article: "Toronto" to see what I mean). I also want to have grow diaries and marijuana blogs. All in all, basically more communal than encyclopedic.

I am in need of admins/moderators, and people experienced with MediaWiki to help build policy, categories, and templates, etc. If you'd be interested in helping me with this project, the URL is MarijuanaWiki

Thanks for your time and consideration. Hope to see you there!

[edit] william reid

there's a pretty good chance that you know more about this than i do, but what is your source for the bit on will reid using a fuzz-wah in the jmc? it's more out of personal curiosity to be honest. i can't recall any of their songs that use a Wah wah pedal, and it seemed so much more obvious for him to use the FY-2, which i've heard elsewhere. in the mean time, i'll change it to just "Shin-ei fuzzboxes" to be more general. [edit] License tagging for Image:Questions and answers CD2.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:Questions and answers CD2.gif. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 21:09, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Young Team

I see that you moved the Mogwai album Young Team back to Mogwai Young Team. However, the band's record store is not the most reliable source information about the album title. A quick google search returns more results for "Young Team" separate from "Mogwai" than "Mogwai Young Team". Also, according to Mogwai's record label's website, the album is called "Young Team". So even "official" discographies are at odds. I say it should be kept as "Young Team". That's much better looking, and is how the album is more commonly referred to. Evan Reyes 00:00, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

I should add that the track listings on the "official" site also have all the titles in lowercase letters. Surely you don't support changing every album's tracks to lowercase on wikipedia because of that, do you? Evan Reyes 00:02, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

From Mogwai.co.uk's FAQ, written by the band members:

"A while after that, before the recording of Mogwai Young Team..."

"Q: How many records have you released? What are they? A: We have released 4 albums (Mogwai Young Team'..."

"When you're young, there are always gangs; "Oh, you can't go up there because there's this gang hanging about." none of us really were part of all that, but it's what we went to school with and just remembering the things that we used to see greatly amuses us. When we went on tour before we recorded the first album, we were getting quite silly. That's when we made up all our alternate names. And we decided that we were Mogwai Young Team: a gang. We got quite excited by a kind of tour madness and started writing "MYT" and we got a bit carried away." - John Cummings

The band themselves refer to the album as "Mogwai Young Team", so it is considered the official, proper title. Whether the track titles on the site are in lower case or not doesn't have anything to do with the fact that the album's called "Mogwai Young Team". "Young Team" is a scottish term which refers to a gang of youths, and they always have their town's name in their title, eg. CYT = Craiglang Young Team. "Young Team" doesn't make sense on it's own. I believe it should be kept as "Mogwai Young Team". Daisy-berkowitz 00:27, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Also, The Beatle's 1968 album "The Beatles" is commonly referred to as "The White Album", but it's wikipedia page is still The Beatles. Why should "Mogwai Young Team" be any different? Daisy-berkowitz 00:34, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

My point about the lowercase track names was that the link you provided cannot be taken as a 100%, canonical source of Mogwai's discography. The site is horribly inconsistent, and is run by "Resonance", not Mogwai themselves. Even considering the meaning of the term "young team", that doesn't mean it always has to have the hometown in front of it. If there is an unspecified "young team", then there wouldn't be a hometown in front. I say we open a vote on the talk page to find a general consensus. Evan Reyes 00:39, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Agreed. Daisy-berkowitz 00:41, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Quick question. Do you disagree with my moves of "Mr Beast" to "Mr. Beast", "Come On Die Young" to "Come on Die Young", and "Government Commissions" to "Government Commissions: BBC Sessions 1996-2003"? Evan Reyes 00:57, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

I don't know about Mr. Beast, CODY and Government Commissions don't really matter. Daisy-berkowitz 09:16, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Russell brand.JPG

Thanks for uploading Image:Russell brand.JPG. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — AnemoneProjectors (talk) 21:04, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Bitches Ain't Shit

Thanks for helping with the Bitches Ain't Shit article. I knew I kind of made a mess there, since there wasn't much about Ben Folds' version there, but I tried to make it so it mentions Dr. Dre's version more, after all, it is his song. --- Efil4tselaer 23:09, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Clara.rockmores.lost.theremin.album.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Clara.rockmores.lost.theremin.album.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. [edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:4satin vinyl.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:4satin vinyl.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. – Riana 06:56, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Advice on uploading images

Hello!

Thanks for uploading some pictures to Wikipedia. I wanted to make sure you were aware of some of the requirements and good practices for uploaded images.

  • Pick an image name.
When uploading an image, pick a file name that is descriptive, and unique. Remember that many images may be uploaded about the same topic, and remember that names are case sensitive.
  • Source the image.
On the image description page, explain where the image came from. If you created the image yourself, then say so. If it's from the web, give a URL. If it's a screenshot of a movie or game, or a scan from a book, give the title.
  • Provide copyright and license information.
This part is a little bit trickier, but it's very important. The copyright of the image generally belongs to whomever created it.
If it's a photograph you took, or an image you created (modifying an image that already exists doesn't count) in software like Photoshop or GIMP, then you own the copyright. To upload it to Wikipedia, you must agree to license it under the GFDL (which allows anyone to use it, but requires that they give credit to the original author and requires that any further edit to the image be licensed under the GFDL as well) or release it into the public domain (which allows anyone to use it for any purpose without restriction.) Do this by placing an appropriate tag on the image description page, like {{GFDL}} or {{PD-self}}. Be sure to mention that you created the image. If you're using {{PD-self}}, you may also want to use {{NoRightsReserved}}, since there is some dispute as to whether one may grant items into the public domain.
If you didn't create the image, or the copyright somehow belongs to another party (like a screenshot, which you might "create", but the copyright belongs to the author of the movie or video game), then you need to find another tag that describes the copyright status of the image. Images used on Wikipedia need to be free for our use and the use of sites which reproduce our content. This means that images cannot have a restriction such as "only for use by Wikipedia", or "for non-commercial use only", or "for educational use". Images without a free license may be usable in certain articles under fair use, but such a use should be justified on the image description page.
  • Describe the image.
To another reader, the image may not be immediately understood. A caption in an article doesn't explain the image to a visitor who sees it on its image page. Put a brief explanation of what is in the image on the image description page, similar to what you might include in a caption on an article.

[edit] Review dates in album infoboxes

I notice you've been removing some review dates from album infoboxes, replacing them with "link", most recently on Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not. While "link" is more common in practice than review dates for album reviews, review dates are actually preferred, and "link" should only be used if no review date can be found, as per WP:ALBUM#Professional reviews. Have a nice day. --PEJL 18:14, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Boosh Template

I like it, good work! ...adam... (talkcontributions) 16:14, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Cheers! Now we need to get individual articles for the main characters, the stage shows, and the radio series created! Daisy-berkowitz 16:17, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
Damn straight, the whole thing needs a good clear up. I've started to collate all the pages at [[Category:The Mighty Boosh]] and added a cat tag on the template. See if we can get all the pages so we can sort them all out. ...adam... (talkcontributions) 16:45, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
Assuming I could get enough info on each of them, I could probabley take care of the Stage show and the Radio series articles...Daisy-berkowitz 16:52, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
Coolio - I have to say that the stage shows aren't my forte - sorry. As for the radio series, if you can get hold of a copy of them it's well worth it. What else do you think is needed? ...adam... (talkcontributions) 17:33, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
I'm quite fond of the stage shows. I already have the radio series, yeah, It's great... I think that maybe the main five characters could each have a page of their own... Maybe not though. Good work on the whole "Minor characters featured" bit in all the episode pages, by the way. Daisy-berkowitz 20:05, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks! I'm avoiding coursework so I have a lot of procrastinable time on my hands. And the main 5 do deserve their own pages in my opinion, just there isn't enough to put there yet (vince had one but there was nothing on it apart from the odd "LOL VINCE IZ HOTTT" and noone bothered to turn it into a healty article to it got speedily deleted). Having said that I think that the hitcher and the bongo brothers do have enough, but they're only minor characters and so require less.

The character descriptions are really not up to scratch to be honest though, so making sure that it's all coherent and not garbled is probably the priority. They need to be character descriptions rather than lists of jokes or the garbled mess most of them are at the moment. But then again I'm a pedant (speaking of which, good work on the edit on my userpage). ...adam... (talkcontributions) 20:44, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Wowser - good work. Now what do do with the main page now all the information is all over... but excellent job. Just one thing though, I'm not sure about the fair use on Image:Autoboosh.the.list.cover.jpg - do you have to meet both the following criteria?

  • to illustrate the publication of the issue of the magazine in question
  • with the publication name either visible on the image itself or written in the image description above

If so, it fails the first obviously. If not it should be good. ...adam... (talkcontributions) 23:16, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Cheers. And about the Boosh on the cover of The List, I just thought It'd be a useful image to have on the page. I'm not really sure about the licensing I put on it...Daisy-berkowitz 23:26, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Don't get me wrong - it looks great. And if the copyright only needs one two to be fulfilled then it shall remain so. I just wondered if you knew rather than me checking anywhere else. ...adam... (talkcontributions) 23:31, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

What should I add to keep the image from being deleted?Daisy-berkowitz 23:34, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

If both have to be satisfied - then nothing, it will have to be deleted as otherwise it's a breach of copyright. If only one has to hold then its safe indefinitely. However, Flikr is a good place to find images of live shows by people that will be willing to release the copyright of their photos if the images does get deleted and needs a replacement. ...adam... (talkcontributions) 23:50, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Hey, on Autoboosh (2000 Stage show), if you could add a section on what the magazine said about the show, or what was in the article about them, then the image can probably say. Thought I'd let you know. ...adam... (talkcontributions) 17:14, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

I dunno what the article said about them, I've only seen the cover... Daisy-berkowitz 17:28, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
