[edit] Historical Chrysler VIN systems
(Please expand this section with more options, date range, etc.)
During the muscle car era, a simpler VIN system was used. The VIN number should match the VIN number on the broadcast sheet which was attached to the bottom of the driver's seat and provided a further breakdown of the car's options and production information at the factory.
First digit was model or series. "V" was Plymouth Valiant, "L" was Dodge Dart.
Second digit was trim line. "L" was low, "H" was custom, "P" was Premium.
Third and fourth digits were body style. "41" was four door sedan, "29" was two door fastback.
Fifth digit was the engine. "C" was 225 Chrysler Slant 6 engine, G was 318 V8.
Sixth digit was the last digit of the production year.
Seventh digit was the assembly plant. "R" was Windsor.
Remaining digits were the sequential build number.
An example VIN decoded:
VP41G5Rxxxxxx - Valiant, premium Brougham trim, four door sedan, 318 V8, 1975 model year, made in Windsor, Canada. The remaining six digits would be the sequential build number.
The 1970 Plymouth Valiant in Private Parts can be assumed to have a VIN number with VL41x0x as the first seven digits; engine size and build plant cannot be determined from the exterior shots in the film.
