Dai Mahou Touge (大魔法峠? lit. Great Magical Gap) is the title of a Japanese comedy manga and OVA. The story revolves around a young girl named Tanaka Punie who is princess of Magical Land. In order for her to become queen, however, she must become a transfer student in a Japanese high school. Due to her potential to become the next ruler, she has many enemies that wish to assassinate her. This proves difficult to them because Punie is both skilled at martial arts and possesses magic powers which she uses to quickly defeat her enemies. The series is a parody of magical princess animes, and often uses the juxtaposition of cute characters with brutal violence for humor.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Tanaka Punie (Seiyū - Rina Satou)

The protagonist of the story, she has come to Japan in order to prove herself worthy of becoming the queen. She is the princess of Magical Land and, as a result, has many enemies who she defeats with her submission maneuvers and magic powers. Punie may seem young and innocent, but when threatened (and she feels threatened very easily) she becomes violent and aggressive. On the outside she is a cute and carefree girl, on the inside she is a ruthless evil witch, who does not even refrain from killing people, unicorns and vegetables. Her incantation is 'Lyrical Tokarev, Kill Them All'.

Paya-Tan (Seiyū - Chiwa Saito and Jouji Nakata)

Punie's "mascot" and constant companion, Paya-Tan is a dog-like animal with a unicorn's horn that is personified as having two distinct personalities and faces. While assisting Punie he acts cute with a high voice and silly talk, but when they first met he acted harshly towards her and responded to her attempts to make him her mascot with violence. He may still wish to betray her, despite helping her on various occasions. When not with Punie, he may reveal his more adult face and deeper voice - and smoke a cigarette. In the past he also served as an army colonel.

Koku Tetsuko (Seiyū - Noriko Shitaya)

Tetsuko is a classmate of Punie and also her best friend. She is often confused about what is happening and easily becomes upset. Her name is a pun on "Railway Child" (tetsu = iron; rail is assumed; ko = child), and she identifies with trains, which appear in montages.

Anego (Seiyū - Ayako Kawasumi)

Another classmate, Anego is one of Punie's rivals. She is the leader of a girl gang that are trying to maintain a position of power at the school while causing general mayhem. She later befriends both Punie and Tetsuko. Because of a crush she has on a boy in her class, she also exhibits the qualities of a tsundere character.

[edit] Supporting Characters

Esmeralda (Seiyū - Mami Koyama)

Punie's Mother and queen of Magical Land. She was responsible for the coup which eliminated the previous rulers and gave herself political power.

Punie's Father (Seiyū - Nobuo Tobita)

He is the submissive one in the relationship and is deeply concerned for his daughter's well-being.

Pyun (Seiyū - Ayaka Saito) and Potaru (Seiyū - Kana Hanazawa)

Punie's little sisters who sneak to Japan in order to assassinate her. They possess the "Ring of Immoral", a magical heirloom which they use in order to summon a spirit to destroy Punie.

Elise von Barbaroque (Seiyū - Mamiko Noto)

The daughter of the previous king of Magical Land. She seeks revenge against Punie for Esmeralda's actions.

[edit] Trivia

  • Tetsuko's name sounds like the Japanese for "rail girl", a point which is often played upon.
  • In episode 6 of the OVA, the driving scene is a parody of the racing scenes found in the Initial D series.
  • During the opening sequence, Punie dances beside several famous buildings in Japan, which are set on fire, presumably by Punie.
