Dahlem is a locality in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf borough of southwestern Berlin. It is one of the most affluent parts of the city and is home to the main campus of the Free University of Berlin, several other institutions of higher education and research, the Berlin Botanical Garden, and many museums.
The first written account of Dahlem dates to the year 1275. In 1920, it was amalgamated into the city of Berlin. During the Cold War Dahlem lay in West Berlin; the location of many of the city's former artistic, cultural, and educational institutions in the east was the reason so many were established in Dahlem during the 1950s and 60s. Until 2001, when Berlin's borough system was reorganized, the district lay was part of the borough of Zehlendorf.
