Dagwoods

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dagwoods is a fast food chain that whose stores are located exclusively in the Greater Montreal Area. They serve fresh sandwiches and slice the meat and cheese right in front of the customer. Their policy is also that all bread is baked fresh daily. It started in 1989, at one location on St. John's Blvd. in Dollard-Des-Ormeaux, and now has since expanded to more than 16 in the greater Montreal area, including one at John Abbott College, and another at Champlain Regional College on Montreal's South Shore.

Dagwoods stores are open generally between 11:00AM and 10:00PM. As a result, they specialize in serving lunch and dinner meals, and do not have a breakfast menu. Along with their reknown sandiwches, Dagwoods also offers chili, soup, pickles, freshly bakes cookies, brownies, pepperoni sticks, chips, salads, tea, coffee, soft drinks, milk, juice, and other beverages with their small or large sandwich. You can get a "Trio" if you purchase your sandwich with any two of the previously mentioned products, where 50 cents is deducted from the total price of the meal.

As of 2005, all of Dagwoods' stores offer toasted sandwiches along with their traditional sandwiches.

Dagwoods also is known for its "Special Sauce"...the Dagwoods Sauce, as they like to call it. The Dagwoods sauce can be put on any sandwich, along with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, green peppers, hot peppers, sliced onions, mayonaise, regular mustard and dijon mustard.

The man behind the introduction of Dagwoods to sandwich-loving Montrealers is Spiro Kralis. He's the one who started it all, opening the first Dagwoods store in 1989. Since then, Dagwoods has expanded greatly. In 2004, owning all 13 Dagwoods stores, Spiro decided running all of them at the same time was a little too much work he could handle, so for the first time in Dagwoods' history, they began to franchise their stores.

Historically, Dagwoods' main competitor has been Subway, but in recent years, Quizno's has entered the Quebec sandwich market, and McDonald's has also adopted a sandwich menu.
