Note on the name -- in case anyone's confused about the "ap" and "ab" appellations, "ap" in Welsh means "son of". So Dafydd ab Owain is Dafydd son of Owain. However -- in Welsh, when the father's name starts with a vowel, "ap" turns into "ab", much like how "a" becomes "an" in front of a vowel. For comparison:

  • Dafydd ab Owain
  • Dafydd ap Gruffydd
