Daffyd Thomas (Born 1978, Llandewi Breffi [1]) is a fictional character from the cult BBC television and radio series Little Britain played by Matt Lucas. His catchphrase is "I'm the only gay in the village".
Daffyd (whose first name is a misspelling of the real Welsh Christian name Dafydd, pronounced [davɪð]) claims to be the only gay man living in the small Welsh mining village of Llandewi Breffi (the name of which is a reference to the village of Llanddewi Brefi), despite plentiful evidence to the contrary. He himself, however, often displays homophobic, or at least stereotyping, tendencies, much to the chagrin of barmaid Myfanwy, who is later revealed to be a lesbian.
He expresses frustration at not being the recipient of homophobia despite showing outrageously homophobic behavior on occasions (for example at a "Gay Night" organized for him by Myfanwy, the pub began to fill with gay men Myfanwy had invited, Daffyd held a bar stool threateningly and yelled "get back you gay bastards!").
Myfanwy constantly encourages him to meet other gay men and to have some "bum fun", something he never does and has never done.
Apparently, he didn't realise he was gay until he was twenty-two (and he claims to be only twenty-five in an episode of the first series), and cannot recognize a fellow homosexual upon merely seeing one or showing extreme levels of denial. He can often be found in his local pub, "The Scarecrow and Mrs King" (a reference to the television series Scarecrow and Mrs. King), sipping Bacardi and Coke and reading his copy of Gay Times. Daffyd once stood for political office in a by-election on the "Gay Rights for Gays Party" ticket.
Homosexuality seems to run in his family, as his uncles, cousin, aunt and brother are all gay, and Myfanwy claims that even his mother had a bit of "fanny fun" with her own Aunt Ruth. He is unemployed and lives with his parents, since he believes that his sexuality would prevent him from getting a job or home of his own. According to the stage show programme, Daffyd blames "insitutionalised heterosexualist, anti-gay homophobia {sic}" for his lack of motivation to gain employment.
He has encountered various gay characters played by David Walliams, but the character that could be considered Daffyd's David Walliams counterpart is Old Ma Evans's lodger, whom he met in the first episode of series 1.
In the final episode of the third series, broadcast on Christmas Eve 2005, Daffyd enters the pub and announces to Myfanwy that he is leaving Llandewi Breffi and moving to London where he can be a proper gay. After sarcastically congratulating everyone in the pub for forcing him to leave the village because of his homosexuality (which they haven't, since no one cares that Daffyd is gay and many villagers are also homosexual), Daffyd goes to the train station with Myfanwy who mentions that Daffyd will no longer be able to call himself the only gay in the village.
Daffyd is upset at the thought of this, pretends to miss his train and even when it turns out that another train is actually due in five minutes, returns to the pub with Myfanwy for a Bacardi and Coke.
In Little Britain Abroad, he learns that Myfanwy is opening a gay bar on the Greek island of Mykonos. He is then asked to hand out leaflets advertising the bar's grand opening night, but despite being away from home, Daffyd still considers himself to be "the only gay in the village", despite the fact that Myfanwy tells him that the area of Mykonos where they are located is "teeming with todger". Daffyd then goes onto the nearby beach and although he sees a lot of gay men relaxing and doing things together, he does not hand out any leaflets (except to a little girl playing on the beach and a nun). Later on, Myfanwy is appalled that Daffyd only gave out two leaflets and no one turns up... ...but to their surprise, the nun Daffyd met appears, asking for some "fanny fun" in Greek.
