Monkou is known as Kenneth in the Netherlands from his time when was playing at Feyenoord. You can change it back to Ken with a redirect from Kenneth, although in my opinion it should be Kenneth with a redirect from Ken. I will however not revert you if you decide to revert me. [edit] Replacing [Football Club F.C.|Football Club] with a template

Hi,

I noticed that you replaced the [Football Club F.C.|Football Club]'s with a template in the article on Kyle Critchell. Could you explain why as I've always assumed that the full way of doing this is better than a template (that usually is only used when editing and has subst: as part of it to make it into the full version). Hello again, thanks for your reply. I agree about the fewer keystrokes the better, so maybe you should use the template subst:fc|Southampton which with brackets around it will give you [Southampton F.C.|Southampton]. That way you get it looking how you want, but the link is straight to the club's proper page without having to diverted via redirect pages. My question was raised because you actually replaced the full link with one that goes via a template. the subst: bit replaces the template with what the template creates.

Anyway, yes I am a Torquay fan so hopefully we'll play Saints in the cup (though doubt it with our current form). WikiGull 19:08, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi Daemonic Kangaroo, I did so because the user that added them has only ever contributed to Wikipedia to add links to his own personal website (generally frowned upon), and the pages contain little else that other than a couple of pictures and a referral link to Amazon, which I suspect is the main reason for the additions. If the pictures are not copyrighted, then maybe they could be included here, along with an attribution to the site. If they aren't, then we shouldn't be linking to them anyway. "(soccer player)" is too specific; you redirected some articles for people who are now better known as coaches. For US/Canadian players, the standard disambig is just "(soccer)"; it also helps in the long run if a player goes into coaching, which often happens. DR31 (talk) 05:00, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Here the heading "Apps (goals)" is considerably wider than most of the numbers I've seen below it, causing the table's column widths to appear unbalanced. If you're not keen on "A (G)*" plus explanatory footnote as a solution, does anything else come to mind...?  (Just seems a pity to have a good template compromised by a single factor...)  Regards, David Kernow (talk) 18:37, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

I can see what you are trying to achieve and the other changes you made definitely improved the appearance of the infobox. My problem with A (G) is that I have an aversion to abbreviations, but also the change hasn't really made the problem go away. The A/Apps is in the same vertical column as the first digit of the appearances (caps) and the (G)/(goals) follows straight after - this means that the (G)/(goals) is not centred over any particular column...
I hadn't realized that was the intention, but...
...this would mean that every single player article incorporating the template would need to be amended to fit [a] new layout.
Yes... I imagine it's a task that could be given to a bot in lieu of a simpler alternative...
...Perhaps we should ask the members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Football for their opinion. I'm not sure how you could compare one against the other though - this would probably mean creating a dummy template and adopting it on a few players articles just to see what it would look like.
I set up a couple of pages for this purpose – User:David Kernow/Test template and User:David Kernow/Test page – so will now copy the previous version and a few examples there. There's a "pages" attribute in {{cite book}} so it's dead easy to do - see the footnotes in History of Arsenal F.C. (1886-1966) for how I have used it. If it's a direct quote then you might as well make it explicit in the article: e.g.

Parker was described in Holley & Chalk's The Alphabet of the Saints as "never the fastest of players, but he had wonderful positional sense and his tackling was always well-timed".[1]

Hi, Thanks for your message - and yes, great win v Grimsby, still think we're doomed, but some hope again. Anyway, re Hoskins, I've got two books that I used on that article for his non-Torquay stuff, the 'Football League Players' Records 1988 to 1939' by Joyce, and a book called 'Football Managers' by Turner and White.

Both have the H as Hubert, and have him being born in Tettenhall in 1883. The managers book has him as joining Wolves in 1900 and joining the office staff in 1904. Doesn't say anything about him playing for any other club. the players' book (which I trust more than any other source I've found so far) has him playing for Freemantle, Southampton, Wolves, Dudley and Shrewsbury (in that order), with him playing in the league in the 1908-9 and 1909-10 seasons, which ties in with what you're saying. I'm inclined to think that the managers book is slightly incorrect and that he would have joined the Wolves office staff after his playing career was over, so will change the text to so that and add a reference. I'll also add a note to the talk page about the discrepancies we've identified in the books (I'm assuming it is the same person, particularly with him playing for Wolves around the right time for your book to be right (about that bit anyway). As for his managerial career, that's in lots of books with lists of managers and I wouldn't necessarily trust soccerbase for everything (they have no missing code, so just make up dates for sometime around then (otherwise you have lots of people moving on the 1st of the month!).

Thankyou for your input into the football player articles, but please do not amend the infoboxes to show season by season appearances & goals - this is not appropriate. The infobox is only a summary of a player's career. Thanks for your message on my talk page. It seems that the article you refer to has already been speedy deleted (as is appropriate for a straight recreation of a deleted article), but for future reference, if you do want to add a nomination to the football project page, all you have to do is edit the "Nominations for deletion and page moves" section. At the bottom of the list of current nominations (immediately above where it says <!-- Deletion review -->, just add this text:

  • Ex Southern League clubs - Canterbury, Eastleigh, Road Sea Southampton & Thornycrofts
  • Ex Wessex League clubs - Sholing, Wellworthy, Ryde & Portals
  • Ex Hellenic League club - RS Basingstoke
  • Ex Hampshire League top division - Mayflower, AFC Basingstoke, Bass (Alton), Awbridge and Pirelli General

I don't think that's a great idea it will be incorrect in certain situations that we can't fix manually (e.g. see what it's done to Matthew Villis. From a review of the talk page for User:John baptiste it appears that this article has been deleted twice already, but has been re-created. The present version was created by User:Leemyster. Although I'm still in mourning over last night's efforts, I have had an idea this a.m on entries. Player who played for reserves for Saints, but not first team who played league football should be included. I mean, Gareth Taylor's in the article, isn't he???? Suggestions:- (or to add form already existing articles), Peter Ward, Lawrie Sanchez, Chala the Ecuadorian guy, Ron Futcher, John Filan, Frank Talia. Erm, this is very difficult to do when half asleep. In That Number has an awesome list, worth looking toward the back. {{helpme}} The picture referred to above is of a long-deceased footballer. Judging by his age in the photo, it was probably taken before 1900, and the photographer is presumably unknown. The photo appears to be the only none available for the subject as it appears on several other websites and is used as part of a book-cover illustration. I've reverted the change, as I don't think this has been discussed anywhere. Personally, I'm against the use as it adds unnecessary wikilinking of m and in... The opening paragraph should feature an overview of all his life. Your edits buried several of the key facts of his life and death, e.g. his early death, his heavy drinking and his status as a player at the bottom of the page. It is common practice for articles to feature on overview and then expand on the highlights with further sections. That way it encourages readers to read further.
