Dae Gak

Robert W. Genther, Ph.D. a.k.a Zen Master Dae Gak, (born September 4, 1947) is an American author, psychotherapist and Zen Master.
Genther was born in Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1969, he received a B.A. at the American International College in Springfield, MA and started Zen training. In 1973, he received a Ph.D. from Kent State University and became an assistant professor at Eastern Kentucky University. In 1979, he left teaching for private practice in Lexington, KY.
In the 1970s, Genther studied Japanese Zen Buddhism with Hakuyu Taizan Maezumi, Eido Tai Shimano and Kyozan Joshu Sasaki. He also practiced with Thich Nhat Hanh.
In 1979, Genther met Seung Sahn and, one year later, started a Zen center. Seung Sahn conferred Inka to him in 1988 and Dharma transmission in 1994. In 1999, Genther returned to lay life. In 2000, he left the Kwan Um School of Zen.
Genther resides at Furance Mountain in Kentucky. He teaches sanghas in the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany.
