I live in Leiden, Holland and study history at Leiden University. The view from my window overlooks the old city centre including the place where the house used to be where Rembrandt van Rijn was born. Leisure activities: meeting friends, playing Empires in Arms via email with people around the world.

- C. 240-C. 249: Roman fortresses in the Lower Rhine area destroyed. They were rebuilded during the reign of Decius 249-251.
- 256-259: Roman fortresses in the Lower Rhine area are destroyed again, by the Franks and rebuild during the reign of Gallienus.
- 306: Frankish uprising during the reign of Constantine the Great

- 355-358: Romans have lost the north again during the reign of Constantius II.
- 407-628: Unknown who ruled in the Lower Rhine area. It could be the Franks on some occasions.
- 628-650: Utrecht was Frankish, but it is unknown who ruled west of Utrecht.
- 692-1572: The pope claimed being the first representative above the emperor.
- 800-1648: The Holy Roman Emperor claimed to be the ruler of the earth above the pope.
- The data about the Danish vikings is very contradictive. What we can be sure of is that Rorik in Friesland for decades and Godfried for a few years afterwards.
- 840-850: Rhine delta was conquered by the Danish vikings in that decade, so the Danish rule started before 850.
- 880-882: King Rorik died somewhere in this period and was not immediately followed by Godfried, King of the Sea.
- 1577-1795: Sovereignty is not clear. Leiden belonged to the county of Holland and the Republic of the United Netherlands.
- 1795-1810: The Netherlands were independent in theory, but actually French.
- 1919-1940: The Netherlands were part of the League of Nations.
- 1945-present: The Netherlands are part of the United Nations.
- 1945-1956: The Netherlands were part of the Benelux.
