Daşoguz Province
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Daşoguz Province (Daşoguz welaýaty / Дашогуз велаяты) (formerly Daşhowuz / Дашховуз) is one of the Welayatlar of Turkmenistan. It is in the north of the country, bordering Uzbekistan. The area of the province is 74,000 square kilometers, and the total population (1995 estimate) is 1,059,800. The capital is Daşoguz (Дашогуз).
The province is mostly desert, and is experiencing severe environmental degradation as a result of the Aral Sea ecological catastrophe. Increased soil salinity has ruined thousands of square kilometers of farmland.
The province contains the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Konya-Urgench.
Both Turkmen citizens and foreigners require special permission to visit the province, as the government regards it as a "closed" border zone.
It is divided into 8 etraplar (singular: etrap) and 1 city. Name changes since 1995 are shown in parentheses: [1][2]
- Daşoguz city (formerly Daşhowuz)
- Akdepe etrap
- Boldumsaz etrap
- Görogly etrap (formerly Tagta)
- Gubadag etrap
- Gurbansoltan eje etrap (formerly Ýylanly)
- Köneürgenç etrap
- Saparmyrat Nyýazow etrap (formerly Daşoguz/Daşhowuz etrap)
