Daira literally means a "circle" which signifies a "boundry" or a "limitation". The term daira is an abbreviation of the phrase "daira e hudoodullah" meaning "A boundry of an area where Allah's decrees are strictly adhered to". The Mahdavi people inhabit the daira. They are the followers of Sayyid Muhammad Jaunpuri [ahs]. There are around 20 Mahdavi Mosques in the Daira of Channapatna.
