The song became a hit in Quebec where it topped the chart on May 7, 1983 for four weeks and spent forty weeks on it. "D'Amour Ou d'Amitié" was certified gold for selling over 50,000 copies. Dion received four Félix Awards in that period.

At the same time "D'Amour Ou d'Amitié" was released as a single in France. It was Céline Dion's second single in this country after 1982 "Ce N'Était Qu'un Rêve." The song became a hit there too. It reached #10 on the singles chart and was awarded with gold certification (over 700,000 copies sold). Céline Dion was the first Canadian artist to accomplish that. Following this success, Dion released her first album in France later the same year. It was called Du Soleil au Coeur.

A music video was made from a TV special when the single came out in 1983.

Because of the big success of "D'Amour Ou d'Amitié," Céline Dion recorded its German version called "Was Bedeute Ich Dir." It was released in as a single that country in 1984, backed with "Mon Ami, Geh Nicht Fort" (German version of "Mon Ami M'A Quittée") as a B-side.

"D'Amour Ou d'Amitié" beacame a part of Dion's 2005 French compilation album On Ne Change Pas.
