Cynthia Olavarría (born January 28, 1982) is a fashion model who has competed in the Miss Universe pageant.

[edit] Early years

Born in Santurce, the art district of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Olavarría was an expressive, and eloquent child. Those qualities made her embark in the world of beauty pageants, hosting and modeling since she was a teenager. At 11, she won her first beauty pageant, Miss Reina Infantil, that led her to became the host of the famous Puerto Rican game show "Contra el Reloj con Pacheco".

She went to La Piedad High School in Isla Verde, Puerto Rico. There, she was an honor student and member of many school organizations, including the National Honor Society and the Student's Council. In 2004, she graduated Magna Cum Laude from University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras Campus with a Bachellor Degree in Mass Communications with a concentration in Journalism.

Olavarría was apparently headed towards a master's degree in International Relations as well as a career with the Elite Models company when she decided to temporarily change her path in order to participate in the Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2005 pageant, where she represented her hometown of Salinas. She won the Miss Puerto Rico Universe crown in October 2004.

Olavarría represented Puerto Rico in the Miss Universe 2005 pageant held in Thailand in May 2005. She became the first Puerto Rican candidate in Miss Universe history to place first runner-up. The winner was Natalie Glebova of Canada.

Many of her public appearances includes Don Francisco Presenta, Despierta America, Cotorreando, Objetivo Fama, and Univision Special Programs, Premios Juventud and Premios Lo Nuestro.

Olavarría continue her modeling career and combines it with TV hosting and acting. She was one of the presenters at Premios Juventud 2005 and attended the Latin Billboard Awards 2005 as well as Premio Lo Nuestro 2005 and 2006. She was also introduce in to acting in theater with her role as a Princess in a kid oriented play titled La Princesa de los Ojos Tristes. She will also have an important role in an upcoming Telenovela produced in Puerto Rico.

Many Puerto Rican fashion designer criticized her outfit for the Miss Universe's finale, saying that her wearing a black dress hampered her opportunity to become elected Miss Universe.

Rumors spread about the national director Magali Febles, as she simultaneously heads two Miss Universe affiliated contests (Miss Puerto Rico Universe and Miss Dominicana Universe).

On September 2005, Olavarría sued Febles for the amount of $2 million, alleging mistreatment by Febles as well as favoritism by Febles towards Miss Dominican Republic. She also alleged that past Miss Puerto Rico's managed by Febles had been managed the same way.

Febles allegedly sent one of her representatives to force Olavarría to give up her title as Miss Puerto Rico during one of Olavarría's personal presentations but, the Puerto Rican court decided that Cynthia had the right to crown her successor.
