From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cycling is a form of recreation, a sport, and a means of transport across land or, much less frequently, ice (icebiking). It involves riding bicycles, unicycles, tricycles and other human powered vehicles. A bicycle, the most notable instrument of cycling, is a pedal-driven land vehicle with two wheels attached to a frame, one behind the other. As a sport, cycling is governed internationally by the Union Cycliste Internationale, headquartered in Switzerland; as a means of transportation and recreation, cycling is overseen by the International Human Powered Vehicle Association. Quotes

  • Ever bike? Now that's something that makes life worth living!...Oh, to just grip your handlebars and lay down to it, and go ripping and tearing through streets and road, over railroad tracks and bridges, threading crowds, avoiding collisions, at twenty miles or more an hour, and wondering all the time when you're going to smash up. Well, now, that's something! And then go home again after three hours of it...and then to think that tomorrow I can do it all over again!American author Jack London
  • You get a feeling on certain trails, when you're reacting like you and your machine are just one thing. It's the feeling of physical exertion and speed and technique all wrapped into one.American cross-country and marathon mountain bike racer Ned Overend

A cyclo-cross bicycle is a bicycle designed especially to handle the rigors of cyclo-cross racing, in which riders conflate mountain bike cross-country, criterium, and road racing skills to navigate repeatedly a small course comprising pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills, and obstacles, the traversing of which requires a bicycle that a rider might dismount with celerity. Such bicycles are similar in form to those ridden by road cyclists but are characterized by a different general geometry and by thicker tires, used in order that the cycle might better survive muddy trails.
