Custom Robo Arena, known in Japan as as Gekitō! Custom Robo (激闘!カスタムロボ Gekitō! Kasutamu Robo?, lit. "Rumble! Custom Robo"), is a science fiction action game for the Nintendo DS. The name was announced on May 9, 2006 at the E3 convention [1], and released in Japan on October 19, 2006. Previous games in the series are Custom Robo and Custom Robo v2 for the N64, Custom Robo: Battle Revolution for the GameCube and Custom Robo GX for the Game Boy Advance.

In the game, the player participates in Custom Robo tournaments and tries to earn money to buy parts to use to improve their robot, and new robot frames. The game features 2-player multiplayer with the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection including voice chat, Multi-Card play, and DS Download Play. Custom Robo Arena also sees the return of the "Rivals" list, a feature first seen in Metroid Prime Hunters. The DS' unique touch screen is also used to choose parts for the robot as well as clean it up after each battle ends.

The new diorama mode allows you to pose your robot in front of a setting; this pose is shown to your opponent prior to a Wi-Fi battle. This is a new feature to the series and exclusive to the DS version.

[edit] Battle

The battle system in Custom Robo Arena is very similar to Custom Robo on GameCube. Battles begin with your robo being launched out of a Robocannon which is controlled with the D-pad. There are six ways your robo can land once shot out of the Robocannon. They are as follows:

  • With gun stuck in the ground
  • With bomb stuck in ground
  • With head stuck in ground
  • With body facing towards the ground (not stuck)
  • With body facing up (not stuck)
  • With feet on ground (not stuck)

The object of the battle is to reduce your opponent's hit points from 1000 to 0 by using different robos, guns, bombs, pods, and legs. Robos are arranged in groups that are similar to their abilities. (Little Sprinter are robos that have good speed)

  • Shining Fighter
  • Aerial Beauty
  • Metal Grappler
  • Little Raider
  • Little Sprinter
  • Sassy Stunner
  • Wild Soldier
  • Big Boy
  • Old-Timer
  • Trick Flyer
  • Strike Vanisher
  • Burning Beast
  • Lightning Sky

There are two modes of battling. Normal view is the view that you can see both the robos. Back view is the view with your Robo's back facing you.

Different Robos have different "charge attacks". This attack used by pressing the X button. The robo charges into the foe by jumping, dashing etc.

The endurance bar is located above your hit points. Once it runs out your robo gets "downed" which means that it stays fallen for a couple seconds. After it gets up, it goes into "rebirth", where it stays invincible for about 5 seconds.
