Culm dump

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A culm dump contains waste materials from processed coal, such as slate and other non-combustible material. Typically, they are located near a coal breaker where the separation of coal and waste takes place.

After many years of mining, culm dumps can grow to mountainous proportions. Since some amount of combustible coal is discarded among the waste, culm dumps are prone to catch fire as they grow larger and become more compressed.
