[edit] Song information
The second single from Jackson's 2001 album, Invincible, was the album's anthem, equivalent to the inclusion of songs like "HIStory," "Man in the Mirror" and "Heal the World" on previous releases. As in the above three songs, Jackson includes in "Cry" a full choir and an uplifting lyrical theme. Another similarity between "Cry" and the above three songs (with the exception of "HIStory") is the climactic key change in the final section of the song, often described as the "All-American Modulation" in music theory circles because of the proliferation of the practice in American popular music, where the main key of the song is lifted up a half-step to increase the intensity of the performance.
Backing vocals on "Cry" include R. Kelly, the song's writer. Though originally set to be released in the U.S., and played on New York City radio stations in the days following 9/11, "Cry" was replaced by "Butterflies" when the latter was released to radio stations in late 2001 and early 2002.
[edit] Music video
The video does not feature Jackson, instead showing people from all over the world holding hands to symbolize unity. This is represented in the song, which includes the lyric "if we all cry at the same time tonight". Though the video was never a hit anywhere, it is believed that Jackson was considering remaking it for the US/Canada release. Before he could do so, Sony cancelled any and all promotion for the album, including singles and videos.
