The song tells the story of a girl who first thought her lover to be insensitive, until one day she saw him cry. "You were all by yourself, staring up at the dark gray sky, I was changed..." The song wasn't a major hit in America but was an MTV favorite and did well overseas. The song was also on the A Walk To Remember soundtrack in 2002. It also debuted a brunette Moore. Moore felt that "Cry" would be perfect for the soundtrack since it would be released around the time of the movie. It is also one of Moore's favorite songs off the album. A version called the "acoustic" version can be downloaded, it is actually the demo version of the song itself.
[edit] Live performances
Moore performed this song often during the promotional time of her 2001 release. She also performed this during her first Headlining concertMandy Moore Live@ShoutBack. She performed this song also at the MTV Video Music awards for Asia in 2002. However the performance was poor due to Moore voice was affected from some type of Virus. Moore has never been known for her large productions, so she kept the song similar to the way it sounds on the album. To this day, "Cry" has been apart of all Moore's Performances, even being incorperated in her 2007 performance at the Sundace Film Festival.
[edit] Music video
The main premise of the video was centered around the movie A Walk to Remember. It showed Mandy in Heaven and Shane West looking through a telescope at her. The movie was based around the telescope. Moore's character "Jamie Sulivan" believes that when she would look through a telescope at the stars she can see into heaven. Shane West looks through the telescope and can see a now passed Jamie in heaven. As the video come to a climax, there is an explosion and stars shoot from behind Mandy. The video also shows Shane West looking at random video of him and Moore. The home video was the summer that Moore's and West's character spent together before she died. The video wasn't a huge success on MTV like her prior video Crush.
[edit] Chart success
The single never cracked the Hot 100 in the States. However, the single was huge over seas in Asia. Mandy performed the song many times over seas and in America, however, it fail to perform well on the charts. She did perform the song, although not that well, at the MTV Video Music Awards for Asia in 2002.
