Cry, Cry, Cry

This article is about the song by Johnny Cash. For the folk group of the same name, see Cry Cry Cry (band).

"Cry, Cry, Cry" is a song written and recorded by Johnny Cash. It was Cash's first recording that found an audience. It centers on an apparently unfaithful lover.

The fact that it was Cash's first successful tune was mentioned in the dialogue of the 2005 film, Walk the Line. It also appeared in the film's soundtrack album, and it was used in the film.

It was the second side of his 1955 debut release. On the front side was "Hey Porter". Although Hey Porter failed to hit the charts, Cry Cry Cry got in at number 6 in country.

The song makes much use of the poetic device of three-peating a word rhyming with "cry": "try", "lie", "why", "bye", etc.

For example, the first four lines:

Everybody knows where you go when the sun goes down.
I think you only live to see the lights of town.
I wasted my time when I would try, try, try.
'Cos when the lights have lost their glow, you'll cry, cry, cry.

Marty Stuart released a cover of the song in 1989; his version peaked at #32.
